Abstract

The present study analyzes the oral production of verb tenses and temporal expressions in Spanish in the speech of Mexican-American children between the ages of two and four and a half. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons are made between production of these structures at one age level and those produced at subsequent ages, in the hope of deriving an accurate picture of the development of these aspects of Spanish across time. Results of the study can provide a basis for determining which verb tenses and temporal expressions may be expected in the Spanish-speaking Chicano child’s repertoire at a certain age level. For bilingual programs in which one of the objectives is the maintenance or the restoration of Spanish, the information should prove useful in the design of Spanish language arts curriculum.
