Abstract

Abstract Employee exposures to iron oxide fume at seventeen arcair and six powder-burning operations were studied at five steel manufacturing plants located in eastern Pennsylvania. The environmental findings show that of the work stations surveyed, employees are exposed to iron oxide fume in excess of the threshold limit value of 10 milligrams per cubic meter of air. Chest x-ray plates of 73 exposed workers were investigated. Of this group, 3 individuals have positive chest plates; however, none of the positive radiographs could be related solely to arcair or powder-burning.
