Introduction

As the world becomes increasingly globalised, the advantages of learning foreign languages are growing along with it, making it so that bilingualism is an important and valuable skill to possess. In Malaysia, Japanese is one of the favorite languages as a foreign language to learn. According to the report by the Japan Foundation (The Japan Foundation, 2015), there are 176 institutions in Malaysia offering Japanese language courses to 33,224 students, while in 2018, the number of institutions offering Japanese language has increased to 212 as well as the number of students who are learning the Japanese language has increased to 39,247 (The Japan Foundation, 2018). It is necessary to have a greater understanding through exploring the motivation of Malaysian students on learning Japanese as a foreign language in the different stages along their study process
