The notion of “multiple intelligences” (MI) was established by Howard Gardner, a psychologist from the United States, during the latter part of the 1970s and the early part of the 1980s. Gardner introduced the concept of MI in his 1983 publication titled Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, positing that individuals possess unique cognitive abilities across eight discrete domains. As per the theory, there exist nine discrete categories of intelligence, such as logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, musical-rhythmic, verbal-linguistic, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, existential, and naturalistic. Individuals construct their distinct cognitive frameworks by engaging in activities that are highly valued within their respective cultural contexts. The present article furnishes a comprehensive outline of the rationales and plausible scenarios for deliberating MI theory with pre-service educators during their teacher training. This study examines the significance of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and comparable models in the context of teacher training, taking into account the distinctions between the semantic theoretical foundations of intelligence in Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory and learning styles theory.

The educational popularity of multiple intelligence (MI) theory is related to the basic needs of teachers as they try to create teaching instruction that is both affective and effective. It is essential to promote understanding and appreciation among students and create classrooms, which help foster learners‘ self-esteem and self-motivation. The application of MI theory allows to meeting the needs of different types of learners. Teachers, who understand and use basics of MI theory, can apply human diversity for better teaching. The respondents in this study are students, who study English at Klaipėda University, and their teachers. The findings have been obtained from the online survey completed by the students and the teachers. It contains 56 statements on a 5-point Likert’s scale ranging from (1) to (5). Having completed the survey, respondents received online assessment of their intelligences. The responses of both samples have been compared and processed by a means of the Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Pearson’s Correlation Coefficients rho demonstrate strong relationships between the profiles of both samples: their magnitudes are close to 1 and the Significance levels Sig p correspond to probabilities of either 99% or 95%. The obtained data can be extended beyond the researched samples despite their small size. KEY WORDS: multiple intelligences, profiles, assessment of learning strengths, overlapping of scores. Identifying students who are gifted has been grounded traditionally in criteria emphasizing unitary measures of intellectual ability, which has caused great concern for educators interested in identifying academic talent and potential in culturally and linguistically diverse students. Recently, multiple intelligences (MI) theory has been examined as an alternative perspective with promise for addressing concerns evident in groups identified using traditional methods. To date, research on the effectiveness of assessment practices grounded in MI theory has been sparse. The purpose of this research was to describe the performance of elementary school children on an alternative screening measure designed for use in identifying students who are gifted. The Problem Solving Assessment procedure represented an application of MI theory, and decisions made using it were compared to those that would be made using a more traditional, unitary approach to identification. Positive relations were evident among scores for different types of intelligences and between them and the traditional measure. More importantly, different groups of students were identified using each approach, with a more diverse population generated with the Problem Solving Assessment procedure. The results are discussed with regard to ongoing practices and future directions in gifted education.

The recent popularity of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory corresponds with current efforts to move away from the use of standardized measures of achievement and ability to more authentic assessment techniques, including portfolio and performance-based assessment. Gardner and his colleagues have strongly encouraged the application of MI theory to performance-based assessment. This study investigates the reliability and validity of a battery of instruments based on MI theory, including teacher checklists and performance-based assessment activities. The purpose in developing the instruments was the identification of talent in culturally diverse and/or low income kindergarten and first grade students. Results suggest acceptable evidence of reliability but raise questions about the validity of the assessments. This study has implications for both future research efforts and the application of MIbased, performance measures to the assessment and identification of talent.

Multiple Intelligences Theory is a typical educational theory of psychology, which has been widely used in classroom teaching in recent years due to its innovative thinking and characteristics. In China's English education of elementary school, under the pressure of examination, students can’t fully understand the meaning and purpose of English learning, and teachers’ teaching objectives are not clear, some schools have uneven teaching standards. According to English education of elementary schools and using of Multiple Intelligences Theory, this paper proposes how to apply Multiple Intelligences Theory in primary school English classes and what are the differences between that teaching method and the traditional teaching method? This paper takes questionnaire survey and comparative analysis method as research methods. By discussing the application of the theory in the classroom, students can give full play to their own intelligences, which is beneficial to promote English learning. Based on the questionnaire results, targeted teaching strategies were designed for eight types of intelligences (excluding existential intelligence, which is less relevant to primary school students), and an experimental teaching practice was conducted. The results showed that MIT-based teaching significantly stimulated students’ interest in English learning, improved their classroom participation, and differed from traditional teaching in terms of teacher roles, teaching concepts, and focus areas. Specifically, MIT-based teaching transformed teachers from knowledge imparters to facilitators, shifted the focus from exam performance to holistic development, and balanced the cultivation of multiple intelligences. This study concludes that the application of Multiple Intelligences Theory in primary school English teaching is conducive to promoting personalized learning and improving teaching effectiveness, providing valuable insights for primary school English educators.
