Challenges with Coordination of Technology Development and Transfer of Industry 4.0 Technologies in IMNs
  • Dec 10, 2020
  • Viktorija Badasjane + 3 more

Within an international manufacturing network (IMN), one particular factory, called the lead factory is responsible for development of new products, processes and technologies as well as transferring these to the subsidiaries within the IMN. These responsibilities require coordination, which is found difficult even in the best-performing companies due to its complexity. When the responsibility for development of Industry 4.0 technologies are included such as cyber-physical systems and Internet of Things the complexity increases further. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify what are the challenges with coordination of technology development and transfer of Industry 4.0 technologies in IMNs. Accordingly, a real-time embedded case study was carried out with six manufacturing companies. One major finding is that development of Industry 4.0 technologies does not fit the current way of organizing technology development at lead factories. Another finding is that several of the identified challenges connected to technology development can be derived from a lack of a long-term strategy ensuring competence for future needs.

EFFECTS OF MARKET FLUCTUATIONS ON THE SRI LANKAN TOURIST INDUSTRY: RESILIENCE AND CHANGE, 1981–1991
  • Feb 1, 1994
  • Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Geografie
  • Gregory O'Hare + 1 more

ABSTRACTDespite the rapid rise of tourism as a major international commercial activity and the marked increase in the numbers of tourists visiting the Third World over the last several decades, the pace of publication of academic papers examining the growth and development of the industry in various tropical locations has remained relatively moderate. This article attempts to redress some of this deficiency and to fill a gap in the geographical literature of Third World tourism. An investigation of market fluctuation within the Sri Lankan tourist industry over the last decade, in particular that of the rapid reduction in tourist arrivals during the period of political instability between 1982 and 1989, and the impressive recovery of the tourist market since 1989, is examined. The progress of Sri Lanka's tourist experience over time is assessed in the light of R.W. Butler's (1980) evolutionary model of tourist development. While the early expansionist development of the Sri Lankan tourist industry between the mid‐1960s and early 1980s fits Butler's model fairly closely, the market response of ‘bust and boom’ since 1983 diverges substantially from his theoretical ideas. The case study also demonstrates that tourism need not exercise a wholly negative influence on an economy; but under the right circumstances can be of benefit to Third World countries. An outline is also given of the methods by which Sri Lanka has attempted to keep in check the negative aspects of tourism in order to ensure that tourism is a positive and successful development strategy. In looking to the future, the tourist industry in Sri Lanka appears to have the potential for continued growth and development provided political conditions in the country remain stable. The industry promises to be an important aspect of Sri Lanka's development strategy, if the negative aspects of tourism can be controlled.

Is the Industrial Policy Suitable for the Industrial Chain? A Case Study from the Photovoltaic Industry in China—Evidence from Shenzhen
  • May 15, 2025
  • Energies
  • Yin Li + 2 more

Shenzhen is a pilot pioneer in China. Developing the photovoltaic industry is an important area for Shenzhen to address climate change; thus, the Shenzhen’s government issued a series of support policies. However, does the released policy promote the development of the Shenzhen photovoltaic industry? Starting from the guiding mechanism of industrial policy on the development of the industrial chain, this paper discusses the compatibility between industrial policy and the development of the industrial chain. Through the analysis of Shenzhen photovoltaic industry data, it is found that the total factor productivity of the Shenzhen photovoltaic industry is twice that of the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, and the life cycle of the industrial chain is lower than the national average. However, the concentration of Shenzhen’s photovoltaic industry in 2021 was less than two-thirds of that in 2013, and it is still declining. At the same time, Shenzhen has obvious advantages in the photovoltaic industry market, but the compatibility of industrial policies is insufficient. Therefore, the overall policy suitability of Shenzhen’s photovoltaic industry is poor. The policy adjustment should be based on improving the concentration of the regional photovoltaic industry and realizing the leapfrog development of the industry by encouraging photovoltaic enterprises to extend to both ends of the industrial chain.

  • Apr 29, 2024
  • Journal of Economics, Finance And Management Studies
  • Xue Kailin + 1 more

The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China made important arrangements for accelerating the construction of digital China and implementing the national cultural digitalization strategy, clearly proposing to "accelerate the development of the digital economy and promote the deep integration of the digital economy and the real economy"[7] Rural tourism is the key to promoting the breakthrough and development of the private economy and the county economy, as well as the key to promoting the adjustment, transformation and upgrading of the industrial structure. In addition, the improvement of the governance of villages near the Yellow River Basin has carried out a lot of theoretical research on the rural revitalization of the Yellow River Basin from different perspectives such as industrial prosperity, cultural inheritance, ecological restoration, and rural governance, which has laid a good theoretical support for the research and implementation of this project. However, compared with the eastern region, there are still a series of problems in the development process of rural cultural tourism in the western region, and some problems have not yet been solved. The Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee proposed that the development of the rural economy should be promoted through the development of industry so that the peasants can live a better life. Therefore, under the requirements of the governance of the Yellow River Basin and the strategy of rural revitalization, it is of great significance to study and discuss the main problems existing in the integrated development of the cultural and tourism industry in the Hubei District of Xi'an City, and put forward targeted opinions and suggestions, which is of great significance to promote the high-quality development of the cultural and tourism industry.

Research on Interactions between the Economy and Environment in Tourism Development: Case of Qingyang, China
  • Nov 3, 2018
  • Sustainability
  • Chenyu Lu + 3 more

Tourism has rapidly developed into one of the world’s largest industries, and represents a new growth point for stimulating a region’s economic and social development. Therefore, a clear understanding of the interactive relationship between the tourism industry, the economy and the environment, as well as the potential mechanisms involved, can play an important role in improving the coordination between these three elements and forming a sustainable development policy. By utilizing quantitative analysis methods and models, this study uses Qingyang City, Gansu Province, as a case study, and tests the relationship between the development of the tourism industry, the economy and the environment. This study makes a number of important conclusions: (1) a mutually promoting relationship does not exist between the development of the tourism industry and economic growth; instead, a unidirectional relationship is found between the two elements. Similarly, a mutually promoting relationship does not exist between the development of the tourism industry and environmental quality; rather, a unidirectional relationship is found between the two elements. (2) The “curse effect” on economic growth imposed by the development of the tourism industry is found to exist. The development of the tourism industry not only exerts a direct negative influence on economic growth, but also adversely affects it in an indirect way through its influence over some transmission factors. Additionally, the curse effect on the environment imposed by the development of the tourism industry is also found to exist. The development of the tourism industry not only imposes a direct negative influence on the environment, but also adversely affects it in an indirect way through its influence over some transmission factors. (3) During the process of regional development, the relationship between the tourism industry, the economy and the environment needs to be correctly addressed. Through effective policies, it should be possible to realize the coordination of and sustainable development between the tourism industry, the economy and the environment.

In the context of global environmental challenges and resource depletion, this study focuses on sustainable development models in the toy industry. The study mainly explores Evertoys’ and the LEGO Group’s adoption and implementation of environmentally friendly business models. Through literature review and case study analysis, this paper examines in detail how these companies address environmental challenges in the whole process of toy production and consumption through innovative business models and sustainable development strategies. The findings indicate that Evertoys' subscription service model and LEGO's recycling program effectively reduce the demand for new toys, promote resource conservation and toy reuse, and provide consumers with more environmentally friendly toy usage options. In addition, these measures are conducive to mitigating the negative environmental impacts of toy production and disposal, driving the industry towards more sustainable development. To sum up, sustainable development in the toy industry requires collective efforts from industry participants, including the adoption of eco-friendly materials, improvement of production processes, increased consumer awareness of sustainable toy choices, and enhanced recycling and circular utilization of toys. Furthermore, policy support from governments and relevant institutions is a key factor in promoting sustainable development in the industry.
