Background: Attitude is critical to exercise; various studies have involved in attitude to physical education but not Tai Chi. However, Tai Chi is a compulsory course in many universities in China, some students may have negative attitude to it. Purpose: To improve college students’ attitude to Tai Chi via the Short Tai Chi Course (STCC). Methods: A quasi-experiment was conducted to assess it. The instrument for attitude is a questionnaire which consist of 15 items. STCC is a 5 weeks course for teaching both theoretical knowledge and practical skill. 325 freshmen were enrolled for the trial and finally 289 students (72.3% female, 86.9% come from countryside) finished it. Results: In the baseline, more than three fourth students showed a neutral attitude to Tai Chi, around one fifth students had negative attitude toward Tai Chi, and less than 10% participants hold the positive attitude to Tai Chi. In the post-test, there is a clear increase of mean for each item but not item 6 and item 15, this change highlights the improve of positive attitude and reduce of negative for college students to Tai Chi. The P value of paired t test for each item (exclude item 14) is 0.000 <.0.001 which indicate those items has an extremely significant difference in pretest and post-test. Conclusion: Although around half college students still hold the neutral attitude to Tai Chi, they already have a significantly improve on positive attitude and considerate reduce on negative attitude.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of malignancy among women in Indonesia. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is one way of early detection to determine the presence of a mass in the breast. But in reality, the awareness to do BSE is still lacking among women. This study aims to determine changes in the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of women of childbearing age (WUS) after attending BSE online classes. This study uses a one-group pretest-posttest . The population in this study were women of childbearing age who came to the integrated service post. Subjects were selected using a purposive sampling technique according to the inclusion criteria of as many as 25 respondents. Based on the results of the research conducted, there are differences in scores before and after the online class on BSE. Before counseling the average score was 53.8 after counseling the average score was 63. The results of the bivariate analysis the average behavioral pretest score was 2.76 while the post-test average was 5.64 with a p-value of 0.01 <0.005 so it was concluded that there was a significant difference in the average pretest and post-test behavior scores. The average pretest knowledge score is 17.48 while the post-test average score is 22.96 with a p-value of 0.01 <0.005 there is a significant difference in the pretest and post-test knowledge scores. The pretest attitude score was 53.8 while the post-test score was 63 with a p-vale value of 0.01 <0.005, indicating that there was a significant difference between the pretest and post-test attitude scores. This shows that online classes have a positive influence on WRA's behavior to do BSE. As a comparison tool for the world of science in enriching information about BSE behavior, it is necessary to conduct research using other methods that further explore the activity of respondents, for example through video media.

Falls among older adults is a pressing public health challenge. Considerable research documents that longer tai chi courses can reduce falls and improve balance. However, longer courses can be challenging to implement. Our goal was to evaluate whether a short 6-week modified tai chi course could be effective at reducing falls risk if older adults designed a personal home practice plan to receive a greater tai chi "dose" during the 6 weeks. A 3-city wait-listed randomized trial was conducted. Habituation Intention and Social Cognitive Theories framed the "coaching" strategy by which participants designed practice plans. RE-AIM and Treatment Fidelity Frameworks were used to evaluate implementation and dissemination issues. Three advisory groups advised the study on intervention planning, implementation, and evaluation. To measure effectiveness, we used Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended measures for falls risk including leg strength, balance, and mobility and gait. In addition, we measured balance confidence and executive function. Program Implementation resulted in large class sizes, strong participant retention, high program fidelity and effectiveness. Participants reported practicing an average of 6 days a week and more than 25 min/day. Leg strength, tandem balance, mobility and gait, balance confidence, and executive function were significantly better for the experimental group than control group. The tai chi short course resulted in substantial tai chi practice by older adults outside of class as well as better physical and executive function. The course reach, retention, fidelity, and implementation across 3 cities suggest strong potential for implementation and dissemination of the 6-week course.

Neonatal Resuscitation: A Blended Learning Curriculum for Medical and Physician Assistant Students
  • Jul 16, 2020
  • MedEdPORTAL : the Journal of Teaching and Learning Resources
  • Cassandra Johnson + 4 more

IntroductionDemonstration of competence in neonatal resuscitation is critical for health care providers who provide newborn care because each year, approximately 400,000 (10%) newborns require resuscitation in delivery rooms across the United States. Therefore, neonatal resuscitation skills certification is provided to graduates entering specific specialties at the beginning of residency and renewed biennially through the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association. However, there is no formal curriculum to prepare medical (MD) and physician assistant (PA) students prior to graduation.MethodsWe developed a neonatal resuscitation curriculum for MD and PA students using a blended learning approach. The curriculum included web-based interactive teaching modules, a demonstration video of a mock neonatal resuscitation, and a neonatal resuscitation simulation. Final-year MD and PA students were evaluated using pre-/posttest, a neonatal resuscitation checklist, and an optional survey on interprofessional communication skills, roles, and responsibility.ResultsEighteen health professions learners completed the neonatal resuscitation curriculum. A paired-samples t test was conducted to compare pretest and posttest scores. There was a significant difference in pretest (M = 61.4, SD = 15.3) and posttest (M = 78.6, SD = 8.0) scores, t(17) = −4.7, p < .001. The mean score on the checklist was 79%. Learners strongly agreed/agreed that the simulation improved skills performance (100%), communication skills (92%), and understanding of roles and responsibilities (83%) during a neonatal resuscitation.DiscussionThere were improvements in knowledge, procedural, and interprofessional skills in learners who received the neonatal resuscitation curriculum.
