Exploring spatial-temporal heterogeneity in new-type urbanization's impact on health expenditure: a GTWR analysis.
To address challenges arising from rapid urban development, China has formulated and implemented the New-Type Urbanization strategy. However, empirical research on the specific impacts between New-Type Urbanization and health expenditures remains limited. Using panel data from 31 Chinese provinces (2012-2019), this study constructed a comprehensive evaluation index system for New-Type Urbanization across four dimensions: demographic, economic, social, and ecological. Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression was employed to examine the spatial effects, influencing factors, and spatial heterogeneity of New-Type Urbanization's impact on health expenditures. The results show that China's health expenditures primarily exhibit High-High and Low-Low clustering patterns with spatial fluctuations. Meanwhile, the impact of New-Type Urbanization on health expenditures demonstrates spatiotemporal heterogeneity and non-stationarity. As urbanization levels increase, the negative effects of health expenditure clustering expand, while the influence of economic urbanization weaken. Our findings fill the research gap regarding the impacts between New-Type Urbanization and health expenditures, while also providing direction for New-Type Urbanization development to support the implementation of health policies aimed at controlling health expenditure growth.

The Paris Agreement emphasizes the critical role of forests in addressing climate change and ecological protection. High-quality forestry development is an important aspect of forest conservation. As a core strategy for China’s economic transformation, new-type urbanization is increasingly interacting with high-quality forestry development. This study aims to explore this relationship and analyze its impact mechanism. Taking the representative Yellow River Basin in China as an example, this research uses a benchmark regression model, mediation effect model, and threshold effect model from 2010 to 2022 to quantitatively analyze the impact of new-type urbanization on high-quality forestry development. The results show that (1) new-type urbanization has significantly promoted high-quality forestry development, with an estimated coefficient of 0.325; (2) forestry in different regions exhibits significant differences, with the forestry return coefficients for the upper, middle, and lower reaches being 0.326, 0.213, and −0.359, respectively; (3) technological innovation plays a key role in improving forestry production efficiency, resource diversity, and ecosystem services, with an estimated coefficient of 6.543 for technological innovation; (4) the greater the government support, the larger the impact. The p-value of the double threshold is 0.037. Accordingly, to achieve high-quality forestry development, joint efforts are required at both the national and regional levels in promoting new-type urbanization. At the national level, specific ecological areas should be taken as units, and a collaborative development plan for new-type urbanization and high-quality forestry development should be formulated based on the land spatial planning system. This plan should clarify top policy objectives, set up special funds, establish long-term incentives and supervision mechanisms, and ensure that new urbanization has a positive impact on forestry development. At the regional level, appropriate technological innovations should be introduced based on local characteristics, and differentiated new-type urbanization development policies should be formulated to promote high-quality forestry development in the region.

With the rapid development of urbanization, problems such as the degradation of water ecological environment have emerged. How to improve the water ecological environment in the process of urbanization has become one of the urgent problems facing policy makers. This paper studies the coupling coordination relationship between new-type urbanization and water ecological environment, with the purpose of using insights gained from the study to help improve the quality of water ecological environment and promote sustainable development of water ecological environment. We take 11 cities in China’s Jiangxi Province as the research object, and construct the coupling coordination evaluation indicator system of new-type urbanization and water ecological environment, then using the coupling coordination degree model to examine the state of coupling coordination between new-type urbanization and water ecological environment from 2009 to 2019. We further explore its driving factors employing random effect panel Tobit model. The results show that: (1) The level of new-type urbanization in Jiangxi Province shows a steady upward trend, and the water ecological environment level tends to rise steadily and slowly, although the comprehensive score of water ecological environment in most cities is lower than 0.1, indicating that the situation of water ecological environment is not optimal yet and there is room for improvement. (2) In 2009, 2014 and 2019, the coupling coordination development level between new-type urbanization and water ecological environment in Jiangxi Province showed an upward trend, from moderate maladjustment recession to mild maladjustment recession, and from low coupling coordination to moderate coupling coordination, although the overall coupling coordination degree was low. (3) The investment in scientific and technological innovation, degree of opening-up and government capacity are positively correlated with the coupling coordination degree, while economic development level, resource agglomeration ability, education level and industrialization level are negatively correlated with the coupling coordination degree. These results can provide insights to support new-type urbanization and water ecological environment in the future, and hold great significance for urban sustainable development.

The development of new-type urbanization (NTU) represents a crucial strategic approach to fostering new drivers of economic growth. Despite its importance, limited research has explored the effects and underlying mechanisms through which NTU influences new quality productive forces (NQPFs), key indicators of emerging economic dynamism. Addressing this research gap, the present study analyzes panel data from 283 Chinese cities spanning from 2009 to 2022, applying a difference-in-differences (DID) model to empirically evaluate the impact of the New-Type Urbanization Pilot Policy (NTUPP) on NQPFs. The findings reveal that the NTUPP has a significant positive effect on NQPFs, a conclusion that is supported by a series of robustness and endogeneity checks. Specifically, the NTUPP’s implementation corresponds to an average increase of 1.1% in NQPFs. The policy facilitates NQPF growth primarily through mechanisms such as talent agglomeration and optimal resource allocation. Notably, the NTUPP is particularly effective in boosting NQPFs at lower initial levels. Since NQPFs inherently reflect green productivity, NTU’s emphasis on green, low-carbon, and civilizational features markedly amplifies the policy’s positive impact on NQPFs, while NTU’s focus on smart urbanization aspects appears to mitigate this effect. These findings contribute valuable empirical insights from the Chinese context, highlighting the potential of NTU to accelerate new economic growth drivers.

The rapid development of the logistics industry and its cooperation with other production factors have an impact on the promotion of new-type urbanization (NTU), a more sustainable and inclusive model of urban growth. This article analyzes in-depth the impact mechanism of logistics industry agglomeration, a new way to promote innovation and improve industrial efficiency, on NTU from various dimensions, including population, economy, society, space, ecology, and urban-rural coordination. Using panel data from 31 provinces in China between 2002 and 2021, the level of NTU was calculated using the entropy weight method, and a spatial econometric model was employed to examine the impact of logistics industry agglomeration on NTU and its spatial spillover effects. The research findings are as follows. The study reveals a spatial correlation between logistics industry agglomeration and NTU across Chinese regions. Logistics industry agglomeration significantly enhances NTU levels and generates spatial spillover effects, facilitating urban development in surrounding areas. The influence of regional logistics industry agglomeration on NTU demonstrates notable spatial heterogeneity, with the central region exerting a greater impact than the eastern and western regions. It can help in the understanding of regional differences and help policy makers optimize resource allocation. The impact of logistics industry agglomeration on NTU is nonlinear, primarily characterized by a substantial improvement in NTU at the medium and low levels due to logistics industry agglomeration. It helps identify regional differences and supports personalized decision making. The level of human capital, the degree of government intervention, the degree of marketization, the level of technological industrialization, the ratio of elderly dependency, and the level of innovation have direct effects and spillover effects on NTU. This paper elaborates on the mechanism of logistics industry agglomeration on NTU in China and proposes targeted proposals for promoting the development of NTU, which is highly important for promoting urbanization in other regions of the world from the perspective of industry.

This paper studies the degree of financial support for new-type urbanization in the west of China. We firstly establish an evaluation system of comprehensive indicators for new-type urbanization. Then using statistical data including 12 provinces in the western regions from 2006 to 2014, we examine the levels of development for new-type urbanization based on the PCA (principal component analysis). The results show that the new-type urbanization in the western provinces suffers from uneven development. Moreover, we use a panel data model to analyze the degree of financial support for new-type urbanization in the western provinces. Empirical results show that financial development is conducive to promoting the development of new-type urbanization. In addition, the financial support is insufficient to the development of new-type urbanization. Finally, we put forward specific suggestions based on the conclusions for further development.

The process of urbanization is supported by the economic foundation and accompanied by the upgrading of industrial structure. At present, the new-type urbanization of Zhejiang is in the stage of rapid development, and the upgrading of industrial structure is continuously and stably advanced and rational. Urban and rural development and urban construction are gradually moving towards a higher level. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the driving effect of industrial upgrading on the new-type urbanization in Zhejiang Province for studying how to further promote the new-type urbanization process in China. Based on the analysis of industrial structure upgrading and urbanization in Zhejiang Province, this paper adopts the entropy weighting method to comprehensively evaluate the new-type urbanization level of each city in Zhejiang Province. Using panel data from 2009 to 2018, empirical analysis is made on the influencing factors of new-type urbanization level score of each city in Zhejiang Province. The influence of industrial structure upgrading index and other factors on the new-type urbanization level in Zhejiang province is obtained, which provides reference for Zhejiang and other regions to guide the industrial upgrading and improve the new-type urbanization development level.
