Abstract

Pectin, a notable polysaccharide, holds importance in various industries, including food, medicine, and several other sectors. Pectin is involved in many aspects of defense, development, morphology, and growth in plants. Additionally, it functions as a gelling and stabilizing agent for a variety of food and contributes to human health and biomedical applications. Muskmelon carries substantial agricultural significance on a global scale. Muskmelon consists good amount of pectin. Significantly, substantial amount of peel waste is generated during the processing of the fruit. The objective of this investigation was to examine various techniques involved in the extraction of pectin from muskmelon peel employing both conventional and non-conventional extraction methods along with their operational issues Additionally, pectin has been affirmed as high-value functional food components. Thereby, this review paper also discusses application of pectin in various food and other industries including biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Further, the present analysis delves into the intricacies, advantages, and drawbacks of extracted pectin using these unconventional approaches, primarily emphasizing the benefits of microwave-assisted extraction over alternative techniques. Future advancements in microwave-assisted extraction will prioritise novel technology, sustainable methods, and extensive research.
