The levels of utilization of visual inspection screening of cervical cancer in Kitui, Kenya
 • Jul 31, 2018
 • The East and Central Africa Medical Journal
 • J H Mwangi + 2 more

Background: Cervical cancer is a disease of public health importance with a high global morbidity and mortality. More than 266,000 women die every year, with 87% of them coming from low and middle-income countries. These are the areas where programmes for screening and treatment are either deficient or underutilized. The morbidity and the mortality rates remain high in Kenya despite the screening and treatment services that the Ministry of Health has rolled out all over the country. Low levels of utilization of the established screening systems leads to increased morbidity and mortality. The problem is more prevalent in the rural Kenya where socioeconomic status of the majority in the population is low. Kitui County is such a rural region in Kenya. Objective: To determine the factors influencing the levels of utilization of the Visual Inspection method (VIA/VILI) for cervical cancer screening services in Kitui County, Kenya. Methodology: This was a descriptive study involving 370 women of reproductive age attending public MCH/FP clinics in Kitui County Kenya. Systematic random sampling method was used to select the participants. Exit interview was the main data collection technique. Key informants were also interviewed and facilities’ preparedness to provide adequate screening services was assessed using a facility survey checklist. Results: A total of 370 women were interviewed, 69.2% of whom were aged below 29 years, 68% were married, 75% had three or fewer children, 19% did not have the basic level of formal education and 61% were earning less than 50 US$per month. The level of awareness on cervical cancer and its prevention was 53.8%, with significant difference in relation to VIA/VILI utilization (OR 3.0675 p=0.000). Significance difference was also observed in cervical cancer testing and level of education (X 2 =21.728, df=3, P= 0.000), the main source of income, (X 2 = 15.030, df=2, P=0.01), average monthly income, (X 2 =27.942, df=4, P=0.0001) and the main decision maker in the family, (X 2 =6.908, df=2, p=0.032). Public health facilities were not adequately equipped and well staffed to provide the VIA/VILI screening services. Conclusion: Low levels (53.8%) of awareness about cervical cancer and its prevention among eligible clients in Kitui Central Sub-county Kenya, which was below the national target of over 70%, low coverage of health facilities and shortage of manpower lead to low levels of VIA/VILI screening. Therefore, there is a need to strengthen the existing services and interventions strategies, and enhance cancer awareness campaigns in order to reduce the incidence of the disease.

Background: Understanding nursing students' attitudes toward gender roles is vital for reducing gender-based discrimination and ensuring equitable and high-quality healthcare delivery. Purpose: This study aimed to assess nursing students' gender role attitudes of nursing students in the South-eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Methods: This crosssectional and descriptive study was conducted using a convenience sampling method with 3244 nursing students studying at universities in the South-eastern region of Turkey. Data was collected using the Demographic Information Form and the Gender Role Attitudes Scale. Results: It was observed that 61.0% of the nursing students obtained a score of < 95 points on the Gender Role Attitudes Scale. Nursing students' attitudes toward gender roles were traditional. A significant relationship was determined (R=0.456, R2=0.205) between students' socio-demographic variables and their attitudes toward gender roles (F=65.137, p<0.001). Gender role attitudes accounted for 20.5% of the variance in socio-demographic characteristics. Father's education level was the most significant predictor of influencing students' gender role attitudes (p<0.001). Conclusion: Nursing students' gender roles should be considered to prevent gender-based discrimination in healthcare services and to create a more equitable environment in the professional field. Implications for Nursing: Nursing education programs need to be revised to increase awareness of gender equality and roles. Implementing courses or training programs that focus on the impact of gender roles on healthcare can help students gain a better understanding of these roles.

 • African Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health
 • Ao Okaro + 2 more

The aim of the study was to assess the level of awareness of the women in Enugu, South-Eastern Nigeria about breast cancer, mammography and breast self-examination (BSE). A crosssectional prospective survey that targeted women between 17 and 40 years old was conducted. The survey instrument was a 13-item self-completion questionnaire distributed to the respondents directly. There was high level of awareness about breast cancer (72%, n=212). The level of awareness about breast cancer was significantly positively influenced by respondents' level of education (P> 0.05). The level of awareness about mammography was low (25%, n=75) and was significantly positively influenced by respondents' level of education. The awareness about breast self-examination was encouraging (56%, n=166) but regular practice of breast self-examination was not as encouraging (45%, n=132). The awareness about breast self-examination was matched by the same level of awareness about breast cancer presenting sometimes as a painless breast lump (56%, n=166 vs 57%, n=168; P> 0.05). The television was the major source of the respondents' information about breast cancer, breast self-examination and mammography. Awareness of breast cancer and breast self-examination among the women in South-Eastern Nigeria is encouraging but their level of awareness about mammography is poor. Education plays an important role in breast cancer awareness and its aggressive pursuit is recommended.

 • Tabassum Parvin + 4 more

Background: Child sexual abuse can have a deleterious impact and is of growing concern globally. Its prevention requires better awareness among the public from different cultures. Objectives: The objective of this study was to measure the awareness level of parents using the Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Scale. Participants and Setting: The current survey was conducted among parents visiting a pediatric outpatient service at a large tertiary care hospital in southern India. Methods: We used a semi-structured data sheet to collect sociodemographic data and used the Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Scale to measure the awareness levels of parents (CSAASP) (Berkmen and Seçim, 2019). It is a reliable and validated 23-item scale with three factors (myths, teachings and action against abuse, and recognizing signs of abuse). We analyzed the association between the level of awareness regarding child sexual abuse among parents attending the outpatient department and their sociodemographic variables. Results: The mean age of the participants was 31.8 years (range: 19–52 years). Out of the 273 participants, we had equal representation from both genders. Sixty-three percent were from rural residential backgrounds. Scores on CSA awareness significantly associated with participants’ level of education (Kruskal–Wallis test and Chi-square [df] = 9.139 [3], P = 0.027) and location of residence (Mann–Whitney U -test, Z = −3.081, P = 0.002). We found a significant correlation between the level of CSA awareness and the age and monthly household income of the participants ( ρ = 0.124, P = 0.041; ρ = 0.214, P = 0.000). Conclusions: Survey participants (parents) had a better awareness of CSA. The level of CSA awareness among parents was significantly better in those with higher education and those hailing from urban residential locations.

Parents' Awareness, Knowledge, and Perception of Amblyopia in Children: A Study in Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia.
 • Nov 17, 2023
 • Cureus
 • Ismail I Abuallut + 7 more

Background Amblyopia is a vision disorder that results from a development problem in the brain rather than a neurological disease in the eye. The condition causes reduced visual acuity in one or both eyes due to the brain's inability to process inputs, rather than a structural abnormality. This study aims to assess parents' awareness, knowledge, and perception of amblyopia in their children in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Methods This is a cross-sectional study that used an electronic questionnaire consisting of five main sections to assess the level of awareness of amblyopia among parents in the Jazan region. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v.25, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was utilized to input the data. The degree to which participants' level of awareness was related to variables such as age, gender, and educational level was assessed through the chi-square test (χ2), and any values that scored p-values under 0.05 were deemed statistically significant. Results The analysis included 572 participants, 395 mothers (69.0%) and 177 fathers (31.0%). The age groups of the participants were divided into 36-45 years (38.0%), 26-35 years (36.0%), and above 46 years (17.0%). Out of the total, 36 participants (6.0%) had a history of amblyopia, and 73 (13.0%) had a child who suffered from amblyopia. The findings showed that only 18 participants (3.1%) had a good awareness of amblyopia, while 242 (42.3%) had a fair level of awareness. Most participants, 312 (54.5%), were classified as having a poor awareness level of amblyopia.Parents with postgraduate degrees, those with prior awareness, and parents whose children had eye diseases demonstrated higher levels of good awareness. However, gender, age, and residency did not have significant associations with awareness levels. Conclusion While parents must be involved in managing amblyopia, our research found that more than half of the parents surveyed had a limited understanding of various aspects of the disease, which can cause permanent damage to their child's vision. Therefore, we recommend implementing health education programs to increase awareness and knowledge about amblyopia in Jazan.
