Abstract

Can’t You Sleep Little Bear? by Martin Waddell and Barbara Firth (Walker Books) is the story of a little bear who is unable to sleep because of his fear of the dark. No matter how large a lantern Big Bear puts inside the cave, there is still ‘too much dark’. In the end, Big Bear takes Little Bear outside, showing him that the sky is filled with the bright moon and twinkly stars, and Little Bear finally falls asleep. This story can be used as a stimulus for a variety of learning areas – finding out about caves, researching bears, learning about the importance of sleep, and so on. Best of all, it is a fantastic springboard for discussion and questions about the nature of light and dark. Children can share what they already know and discuss what they would like to find out. Together you can uncover the answers to their burning questions!
