Purpose In quest of achieving long-term sustainability of co-working spaces (CWSs) and drawing on the cybernetic principles, this study aims to develop a resilient business model promoting economic viability, encouraging environmental responsibility and reinforcing its social impact. Furthermore, to address the transformative shift in way people work in emerging economies, this study probed respondents from India and United Arab Emirates (UAE) and finally identified critical challenges and opportunities bringing in maximum customer satisfaction and achieving long-term business profitability. Design/methodology/approach Using a multi-method qualitative triangulation approach (sentiment analysis), the study collected primary data from India and UAE, analysed through the grounded theory approach. Whereas secondary data in form of tweets was tested using text-mining approach using NVivo. The findings from the dual study were corroborated to identify common dimensions, leading to the development of a hypothetical framework. Findings In CWSs business, dynamic organisation culture holds key in fostering future sustainability, and the study has explored its important antecedents like adaptive management, continuous innovation and technological integration. The impact of these antecedents was found to be moderated by two critical dimensions of regulatory challenges and competitive landscape. Furthermore, the study delved into connecting with the principles of circular economy moderating the impact of dynamic organisation culture towards long-term sustainability of CWSs. Practical implications This study applies cybernetic principles alongside shared and circular economy frameworks to assess consumer perceptions of CWSs. The insights generated can guide researchers, entrepreneurs, urban planners and policymakers in designing flexible business models, strengthening community networks and exploring diverse revenue streams to enhance resilience and long-term growth. Originality/value This research provides empirical evidence on the sustainability dynamics of CWSs, offering a balanced perspective on overcoming challenges and leveraging growth opportunities. Additionally, it bridges the concepts of cybernetics, shared economy and circular economy, presenting a novel framework for ensuring the sustainable development of CWS businesses.

This article examines the United Arab Emirates (UAE) approach to the concept of circular economy to balance economic prosperity with sustainability. The UAE has set ambitious sustainability targets, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of clean energy. The UAE has implemented various economic incentives to achieve these targets, such as carbon tax and subsidies for renewable energy investments. Business guidelines, such as the Emirates Green Building Council's rating system and Dubai Sustainable Industry Platform, have also been introduced to encourage sustainable practices among companies. The research shows the UAE's excellent approach to a circular economy has helped promote sustainable development and keep economic growth strong. The country's efforts have led to more industries using renewable energy and environmentally friendly practices. However, the study also identifies some challenges that need to be addressed, such as the need for more awareness and implementation of circular economy principles in some sectors. The research concludes that the UAE's approach to a circular economy is a good way to find a balance between economic growth and environmental protection. It shows how important ambitious goals, economic incentives, and business guidelines are for encouraging businesses and people to act sustainably. The study suggests that the UAE can continue to lead the way in the circular economy by addressing the challenges and promoting circular economy principles more widely

Hyper-Consumption to Circular Economy in the United Arab Emirates: Discarding the Disposable and Cherishing the Valuable

Overconsumption of resources and consumer items is an important driver for environmental degradation and climate change. Malls, shopping, and conspicuous consumption are deeply ingrained in the local values and the global image of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE has a diverse and international population with over 85% expats and numerous opportunities to reduce environmental impact. Increased participation in a circular economy that aims to reduce resource use by recycling materials, reusing products, extending their lifespan, and maintaining their economic value would be an effective strategy to reduce negative environmental impacts. However, little is known about how much and why UAE citizens and residents participate in the circular economy. Therefore, it is important to examine the factors that predict participation in the circular economy in the UAE. To investigate this question, we surveyed n=163 undergraduate students at an American-curriculum university in the UAE and explored literature-based explanations as predictors for participation in the circular economy, namely gender, nationality, exposure to circular economy initiatives, efforts to reduce ecological footprints, and sustainable consumer behaviors using index-based negative binomial regression models. We also compare differences in ways and levels of participation in the circular economy between UAE citizens and residents with t-tests. Our results suggest that participation in the circular economy does not emerge from concerted efforts to reduce environmental degradation such as lowering ecological footprint and reducing waste, but rather investments in sustainable and durable items. Emirati citizens are more likely to participate in the circular economy, in particular repairing items, than expat residents. These differences are most likely to be explained by the more stable lifestyles of Emirati citizens as opposed to the more itinerant lifestyles of expat residents. As far as social media is concerned twitter has become a major source of public data in the form of tweets. Twitter is an emerging source of large textual data(big data).People can easily express their opinions , reviews, interests and tastes about a particular event, topic ,product etc., occurring worldwide. This makes twitter a good source of valuable data which can be further used to perform sentiment analysis, know trending topics of public intrests and public opinion on a particular product or event which can be beneficial for business growth and political parties to know public choices and they can take actions accordingly. The extraction of meaningful insights from the vast and dynamic stream of social media data is greatly facilitated by the implementation of topic modeling and sentiment analysis on Twitter tweets. The identification of recurring themes or subjects within a collection of tweets, which is the essence of topic modeling, serves to reveal patterns in discussions, thereby aiding in the comprehension of prevalent topics and trends. Concurrently, sentiment analysis, through the evaluation of the emotional tone of tweets, enables the discernment of whether the expressed sentiments are positive, negative, or neutral. The combination of these techniques provides researchers and businesses with valuable perspectives on public opinions, emerging issues, and user sentiments, thereby empowering them to make informed decisions and develop effective engagement strategies in the ever-evolving landscape of social media. But twitter data(tweets) are unstructured ,contains noisy data, urls , stop words, re-tweets video ,emoji etc., which need to be cleaned and preprocessed to perform proper sentiment analysis and use it to extract meaningful effective insights from it. This paper focuses on various methods of topic modeling and discovering latent topics ,text-mining approaches ,micro-blogging methods used in various researches .This paper focuses on latent dirichlet allocation method of topic modeling and text-mining to discover latent topics in tweets, micro-blogging ,text-mining approaches .A proper survey is done on previous researches on this topic in this article. Boosting welfare sustainability by solidarity: Opportunities resulting from circular social economy in Portugal

Aims: To analyze welfare and sustainability concepts framed by United Nations 2030 Agenda highlighting its commitment towards poverty and hunger; to discuss the concept of circular economy exploring the dimensions of sustainability to which it is associated; to analyze the relationship between the circular economy and the social economy, and to distinguish practices based on the assumptions of the circular economy with an inclusive impact at the level of confronting situations of vulnerability/poverty in Portugal. Method: This is a theoretical reflection based on a review of current literature, documentary analysis and searching on websites, on the opportunities of the social economy embedded in solidarity sector to foster welfare (social) sustainability by pursuing circular economy principles. Findings: The issues of poverty and hunger are central to understand the welfare concept and occupy a pole position in the agenda of human sustainability. The circular economy approach has been distinguished mainly as an alternative philosophy of growth (focusing on business) and (environmental) sustainability. Social economy anchored in solidarity organizations reveals the (neglected) social dimension of circular economy due to circular economy principles that they adopt connected to their mission. Conclusions: The opportunities of circular economy to address welfare sustainability, especially for responding to multiple social needs (e.g., basic needs) coming from the circular social economy stakeholders must be reinforced in discourses and political agendas. Also, that opens space to reconfigure the concept of circular economy widening its scope and focus on a complete approach committed to sustainability, being this a direction, that research can deepen.

E-Device Purchase and Disposal Behaviours in the UAE: An Exploratory Study

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the high-income countries in the Middle Eastern region and is vying for sustainable development in every sector. One of the UAE sustainable development goals is to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; hence, the emphasis is on circular economy. UAE is one of largest consumers of e-devices, and their proper disposal is of paramount importance. E-waste disposal awareness leads to better disposal behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to understand the e-device purchase and disposal behaviour among university communities in the UAE. A survey was conducted among the students and staff members of a federally funded university in the UAE, namely Zayed University, and quantitative methodology was adopted to analyze the collected data. The study found that 47.95% of respondents purchased mobile phones, and 65% of the respondents purchased 1–3 electronic devices every year. Through chi-square test, gender of the respondents was found to be related with e-device ownership. Through the analysis of variance (ANOVA), age and field of specialization were found to affect the knowledge about e-waste. Older and the respondents with science specialization were more aware about e-waste. Most of the respondents disposed e-devices, such as batteries, earphones/headphones, and electronic toys, along with the household trash. A very small percentage of respondents disposed e-devices such as laptops, phones, and tablets with the household trash. Mostly, these were either repaired, donated, or sold to second-hand users. Many respondents were neither aware of the government initiatives on e-waste collection nor participated in government-sponsored e-waste recycling. The study further identified that 67% of the respondents were aware of the toxicity of e-waste, and 61% of the respondents were keen to join e-waste recycling drives at university. The findings of the study imply that the policy makers need to incentivize e-waste-disposal systems and develop targeted awareness approaches to enhance e-waste disposal in the UAE.

Construction and demolition waste management in the United Arab Emirates through the 3R principle

PurposeThis study reviews policies, green building regulations, key performance indicators (KPIs) and management methods related to construction and demolition waste (CDW) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It aims to develop a holistic framework based on the 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) principles to assess the current status of circular economy (CE) deployment and identify key determinants for efficient CDW management.Design/methodology/approachA mixed-method approach was used, including desk-based searches, systematic literature reviews and searches of official government websites to review existing CDW management policies and methods in the UAE. Scholarly databases were reviewed to identify CDW management challenges from a 3R perspective. A conceptual CE framework based on the 3R principles was developed using the study's findings.FindingsThe study provides a comprehensive review of CDW management in the UAE, analyzing associated management challenges in the construction sector. It proposes a holistic 3R principles-based framework, emphasizing strategic steps in the building lifecycle, site waste management (SWM) plans, drivers for circular construction and systematic adoption guidelines for effective CE deployment to achieve sustainable CDW management in the UAE construction sector.Originality/valueThis study explores existing policies and challenges in CDW management in the UAE and offers a 3R principles-based framework for CE deployment in the construction sector. It provides valuable insights for manufacturers of recycled products and for integrating circularity into construction projects’ design and procurement processes.

Urbanization and building production that accelerate with globalization, cause excessive resource consumption and waste generation. The circular economy concept which is a contemporary economy approach, has been developed to solve this environmental and economic problem. The construction sector and architectural practice that provide building production need innovative solutions through the circular economy concept, as they consume different resources and produce waste crises. The circular economy concept is applied with the "adaptive reuse" approach in the field of architecture. One of the important applications of the concept of adaptive reuse is the reuse of architectural elements and materials. However, the relationship between the concept of circular economy and the reuse of architectural elements can be developed by examining several recent projects and its advantages. In this article, it is aimed to examine the relationship of this architectural reuse approach with the circular economy concept and to emphasize its importance. For this purpose, the theoretical perspectives and effects of circular economy were examined in the first part of the article, and the reflections of the circular economy concept on architecture were given in the second part. This section continues with description of the comparative analysis methodology that relates the building life cycle and circular economy principles to examine the architectural projects built as an example of circular economy paradigm. In the third chapter, two architectural sample projects built in China and France were selected and introduced. Being pioneers in their countries in circular economy approaches and the different environmental policies of countries have been effective in the selection of examples from different geographies. The fourth part consists of analyzing the projects according to circular economy parameters using comparative analysis method. In the last section, analysis results show that although China is one of the pioneers in adopting circular economy principles with architectural design and building life cycle, it has been found that France considers circular economy design from a broader perspective. Also, the design approach with circular economy criteria in different stage of building life cycle is gaining momentum over the years through national and local governments and collaborations. It is recommended that technological design systems such as BIM can be developed as integrated cloud systems that can share information from other sectors. Because the building life cycle is not only related to the architecture and construction sector. It is a cyclical system and economy that works with different sectors such as supply and waste management.

he concept of a circular economy, which is a practical basis for the implementation of an environmental economy and offers effective business models to ensure more efficient use of resources, contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals, is studied in the article.The main processes of the eco-destructive influence of mankind on the environment are characterized. To determine the degree of eco-destructive influence allows a special indicator −the ecological footprintshowing the demand of the human population for natural capital.It is possible to reduce the effects of eco-destructive impact on nature through the introduction of new life concepts. The connection between the concepts of sustainable development, environmental economics and circular economy is traced. An environmental economy is one way to achieve sustainable development, and a circular economy is a specific tool for the transition to an environmental economy.Circular economy is one of the directions of the green economy. The systems approach presents a circular economy as a model of an economic system, which is an element of a technogenic systemand is based on the reuse of materials, thereby conserving natural resources, and considers the issue of creating value for the elements of the system.It is shown that the principles of the circular economy are implemented through five business models, the introduction of which is possible due to the combination of the circular economy processes in frameworks of varying complexity from «4R» to «9R» based on industrial metabolism and symbiosis, when the interaction between the elements of the technogenic system can be carried out at the micro-, meso- and macrolevels in resourced according to the cascade principle, when the wastes of one production are raw materials for another, thereby ensuring a decrease in the eco-destructive impact on the environment.The circular economy takes into account the biological and technical cycles of the circulation of resources and the potential benefits that can be obtained at different levels of these cycles, it involves a transition from a linear economy to a closed-loop economy. The introduction of a circular economy requires changes in existing logistics systems. Closed supply chains are created that combine the usual processes of a direct supply chain with reverse logistics processes, which can significantly reduce the eco-destructive impact on the environment.

An Exploratory State-of-the-Art Review of Artificial Intelligence Applications in Circular Economy using Structural Topic Modeling

The world is moving into a situation where resource scarcity leads to an increase in material cost. A possible way to deal with the above challenge is to adopt Circular Economy (CE) concepts to make a close loop of material by eliminating industrial or post-consumer wastes. Integration of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and big data analytics provides significant support in successfully adopting and implementing CE practices. This study aims to explore the applications of AI techniques in enhancing the adoption and implementation of CE practices. A systematic literature review was performed to analyze the existing scenario and the potential research directions of AI in CE. A collection of 220 articles was shortlisted from the SCOPUS database in the field of AI in CE. A text mining approach, known as Structural Topic Modeling (STM), was used to generate different thematic topics of AI applications in CE. Each generated topic was then discussed with shortlisted articles. Further, a bibliometric study was performed to analyze the research trends in the field of AI applications in CE. A research framework was proposed for AI in CE based on the review conducted, which could help industrial practitioners, and researchers working in this domain. Further, future research propositions on AI in CE were proposed.

From Linear to Circular Ideas: An Educational Contest

This work proposes a framework with which to analyse Higher Education Institution (HEI) students’ knowledge and understanding of circular economy (CE) concepts and the potential of the CE to promote sustainability, using a contest. The framework integrates CE principles and business models with sustainable indicators, and it was applied to the accepted projects by the contest jury. The contest was launched in 2021 by the CE Working Group of the Portuguese Sustainable Campus Network to encourage creativity and the development of CE projects at HEIs. HEIs can play an essential role in promoting environmental education and creating partners with new visions for society and the economy concerning sustainability, developing knowledge, values, attitudes, and behaviours regarding the CE. The projects were mostly based on the recovery of secondary raw materials/by-products, the CE business model, and the CE principle of value optimisation. In addition, a strong relationship with environmental indicators was observed, but social and economic indicators of the CE were only marginally considered by the students. Therefore, students considered the CE as mostly mainly being related to product recovery/optimisation; thus, the CE concepts and principles and their relationship to sustainability implementation require reinforcement and transversal approaches to increase this knowledge and its dissemination.

This paper examines the topic of environmental sustainability in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). UAE has embedded sustainability topics through its national agenda, green growth strategies, circular economy, UAE Green Business Toolkit, vision, and conferences such as COP 28. This paper uses the case study approach of MASDAR City. This case study serves to discuss problems and initiatives undertaken on human, structural, and legislative levels to alter the environmental status quo. Accordingly, the assessment of Masdar suggests that UAE is aware, though all the challenges and changes, about sustainable development theoretically and practically through policies, implementation plans, and awareness campaigns. As such, in addition to filling the gap in the literature, this paper is significant as it situates UAE experience in the context of sustainable cities and international developments and undeniable impact of globalization.

The Focus and Evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility in the United Arab Emirates

Through in-depth interviews with public- and private-sector decision-makers, this qualitative study investigated modern corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its future path in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Quality education, health and well-being, environment, community development, circular economy, alignment with national priorities, consumer protection and public-private partnerships were discovered as core CSR priorities. Participants identified economic diversification, rebranding, increased environmental stability, strengthened corporate citizenship, improved regulation, and widespread differentiation as future focuses in the evolution of CSR in the UAE. The current and future emphasis of CSR is propelled by the UAE’s sustainable development objectives and human capital strategy. Transparent regulations, robust environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, and innovative strategies can distinguish responsible companies apart in the UAE. Nevertheless, it is expected that CSR will be further integrated into key business activities, aligning with evolving national economic visions, collaboration between sectors, and orientation towards a long-term impact on society. In deed the reputations of companies are enhanced through rigorous adherence to ESG standards, transparency regulations, and innovative approaches. Hence, there has been a strategic shift towards environmental sustainability, stakeholder capitalism, and robust regulation, shaping a highly competitive, impact-focused CSR environment in the UAE, consistent with economic diversification plans.

Earth as a planet has limited natural resources and current levels of extraction and consumption are not sustainable. The organizational model for the production of goods and services in society is predominantly linear: resources are extracted, passed through the production process, used by society, and then discarded, ignoring external effects. While the linear economy was very successful in creating material wealth in industrialized countries until the 20th century, it has proven to be unsustainable in the new millennium, as such an approach depletes natural resources, piles up waste, contributes to climate change, and increases other forms of pollution and environmental degradation. environment. In contrast to the conventional linear economic model, where resources are extracted, used and discarded, the concept of circular (circular) economy is increasingly developing in the world, conceived as an ideal and instrumental model of development determined by the responsible and cyclical use of resources, in order to maintain their value in the economy, minimized the pressures on the environment and contributed to the improvement of socio-economic well-being. The collection of concepts that make up the circular economy enables the reduction of waste by incorporating the reuse of goods components by design through closed loop and cascade approaches, increasing the resilience of the economic system, preserving the environment, meeting the growing demands of an increasingly populated planet and increasing the operability and profitability of production. The application of circular economy principles brings cleaner air through the application of measures to reduce air pollution, encouraging the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency; cleaner water through the implementation of measures to prevent water pollution; regulated waste management system; addressing climate change and a number of other measures that ultimately bring a positive impact on people's health and the preservation of resources for future generations. Eco-innovations are one of the key tools for the transition from a linear to a circular economy and the fight against climate change. The circular economy reduces the pressure on natural resources, and is a prerequisite for achieving the goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and stopping the loss of biological diversity. Implementation of CE worldwide appears to be still in its early stages, mostly focused on recycling rather than reuse. Evidence suggests that CE has numerous advantages as it represents a unique policy strategy for avoiding resource depletion, energy conservation, waste reduction, land management and integrated water resources management. The transition to a system based on a circular economy represents an advantage not only for the market, by stimulating competitiveness and innovation, but also for the environment, reducing resource dependence and waste problems. On the other hand, challenges include lack of clear, standardized quantitative measurements and targets, data quality, lack of advanced technology, weak law enforcement, weak economic incentives, poor governance and lack of public awareness. The advantages are undeniable, and such innovative models lead to a reduction of dependence on raw materials by strengthening the relationship between the company and its customers, offering products with a high degree of customization, the emergence of a participatory economy based on digital technologies, etc. Despite widespread recognition of its benefits, implementation has been slow. Attempts tend to focus on short-term, immediately feasible actions rather than transformative, structural changes. The category of highly circular strategies targets processes such as the creation, design and development of products or services and involves significant investment in research, development and innovation. The lesson learned from successful experiences is that the transition to CE comes from the involvement of all actors of society and their capacity to connect and create appropriate patterns of cooperation and exchange. Previous research shows that the transition to a circular economy represents a systemic shift that contributes to the long-term resilience of society and local communities to climate change and economic shocks, creates business opportunities and jobs, and has lasting positive effects on the environment and society. The circular economy research field still has a long way to go to create positive global, political, economic, scientific, social and environmental impacts. There is a need for studies in different sub-fields to highlight potential impacts in the present and future, as well as research to find ways to accelerate the economic transition towards a circular economy.
