Abstract

The flux transmitted through a multidimensional potential barrier is calculated in a quantum mechanical coupled channels model by adding a smooth, short-ranged absorption to the real potential. In the limit of no channel coupling the barrier transmission is identical to the one-dimensional WKB result. Recent data on sub-barrier fusion between heavy ions are explained in this framework by making use of realistic nuclear structure models for low-lying excited states.
