Abstract

Agricultural decision support systems are not being readily accepted by all potential users. This paper discusses the reasons for this lack of user acceptance and proposes a method for rectifying this problem. The method is based on the premise that good explanations increase user understanding and acceptance of a system. The method involved building a hybrid decision support system which first interprets the output of a quantitative simulation model and then constructs explanations, which are in turn adapted to the particular user. An initial prototype of the system, known as EXPLAIN, is presented.
