Abstract

Describes teaching experiments that are possible using an 241Am-9Be source to activate metal foils. The experiments described demonstrate the growth of activity, with time, of metal foils irradiated with thermalised neutrons. The experiments, using In, Cu, Cd and Cu-Be foils also indicate the high neutron absorption cross-section of Cd and also that Cd is not activated by this neutron absorption. The experiments also demonstrate beta -particle backscatter and composite decay curves.
