Abstract

A renewed interest in problems of stability and transition in swept-wing flows has developed as a result of an emphasis on the design of energy-efficient airfoils. Swept-wing boundary layers are three-dimensional (3-D) in nature and are, of course, subject to three-dimensional instabilities. As recent symposia and conferences have indicated, there is far more current interest in Laminar Flow Control (LFC) problems than ever before. Therefore, the present paper concentrates on work in three-dimensional boundary layers and updates the status of new work in this area. A current review of the 3-D stability work is given in Reed and Saric [509] and recent examples of LFC work is given in [510–512].
