Abstract

Journal Growth In 2009 the journal increased in size from 1000–1200 pages in response to demand. Submissions to the journal have been growing steadily and visibility and interest has increased in parallel. Journal Policy Editorial Board policy is to publish original Research in most areas of physiology which embrace the journal's orientation of translation and integration. Specifically, manuscripts that deal with both physiological and pathophysiological questions that investigate gene/protein function using molecular, cellular and whole animal approaches. Pertinent methodological papers are encouraged as are manuscripts that use computational models to further our understanding of physiological processes. Manuscript which do not fulfill this remit are triaged before review (23% in 2009) Early Author Prize To draw attention to this focus and encourage ‘early authors’ to submit their work to Experimental Physiology prizes will be awarded to the authors of the two papers published in 2009 which best reflect the journals’ translational direction. This will be repeated in 2010. http://ep.physoc.org/site/includefiles/news1.xhtml Content Invited Reviews, Hot Topics, Lectures and Editorial comment which reflect the direction of the journal are also published. The opening issue contained Reports from Symposia held at ‘Experimental Biology’ and ‘Physiology 2008’ In May a Themed issue on Cardiac Physiome was published http://ep.physoc.org/content/94/5.toc And an Exchange of Views on the subject of the control of Blood pressurehttp://ep.physoc.org/content/94/4.toc#ExchangeofViews Future Plans 2010 will see publication of a WINTER OLYMPICS THEMED ISSUE. We are also keen to encourage more Exchanges of Views and Viewpoints – introduced as a new article type for the journal in 2009. We have appointed three New Editors from the US: Gregg Semenza, Marc Kaufman and Andrew McCulloch and Xi-Yong Yu from China. It was with great sadness that we reported the death of Editor Dr Jeff Potts on the 2nd September 2009. Author benefits Experimental Physiology does not impose page or publication charges on Authors and offers FREE online colour. Authors can generally expect an initial decision on their submission within 30 days. Unless the manuscript is recognised as being unsuitable for the journal and triaged within a week, authors can expect thorough impartial review by two experts in the field. Papers are published online within 7 days of acceptance in author pdf format, and in final copy edited version on average within 38 days. Publication in an online issue is on average within 60 days and in a printed issue 75 days. All published papers are made free to all readers within 12 months of publication. Authors whose work has been funded by the NIH will have their papers deposited at PubMed by our Publishers so that NIH requirements are fulfilled. Submissions from US (18%) and UK (14%) continue to dominate and this year we are delighted to report increased submissions from China (9%) Japan (7%) and Brazil (5%)
