Abstract

This research deals with the problem of evaluating the community noise inside dwellings, when traffic noise is to be considered as a reference term for determining the nuisance due to a superimposed disturbing noise of a different nature. A number of 24-h sampling recordings of environmental noise inside various dwellings in Rome are analysed, both with and without a superimposed industrial noise. The commonly accepted ISO criterion, based on the difference between the disturbing noise level and the background noise level in db(A), is compared with the method of the L DI index which directly measures the noise nuisance.
