Abstract

An air-operated two-impinging-streams reactor (AOTISR) was employed as a heterogeneous chemical reactor to carry out the extraction of copper by means of 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime, LIX 84 (15% v/v), diluted with kerosene and the stripping of the loaded solvent by means of sulfuric acid of an appropriate concentration. The effects of the air and solution flow rates, reactor dimensions including the reactor's length and diameter, impingement zone, and modes of operation have been investigated. Also, a comparison has been made between the extraction and stripping rates of copper obtained in the AOTISR and those obtained using a conventional reactor, such as a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). It was realized that the extraction and stripping rates of copper per unit volume of the AOTISR were much higher than those obtained in a CSTR. These experimental results clearly indicate the greater performance capability of the AOTISR relative to those of conventional reactors such as a CSTR.
