Abstract

With the increase in the demand for energy around the world, alternatives must be utilized to meet this demand. Solar power generation is the future of alternative energy because of its ability to generate electricity with little maintenance required due to a lack of moving parts. DSSCs are a type of solar cell that is cheaper and easier to produce than other types. This makes the study of increasing their efficiency of utmost importance. One part of the DSSC, the semiconductor, is often made of a thin layer of TiO2. The efficiency of the DSSC can be positively (or negatively) impacted by the porosity of this TiO2 layer. This study examines the effects of changing the porosity of the TiO2 layer using different combinations of temperatures, times, and sintering process. It found theoretically and experimentally that porosity at range of 0.03 and 0.04 cm3g -1 nm−1 porosity provides the highest efficiency of the DSSC.
