Abstract

ABSTRACT Huge progress has been made in the design innovation for ultra-large container ships, instead of in cargo securing systems. The mechanical behaviour characteristics of the lashing bridge were studied statically and dynamically. Firstly, the static and dynamic characteristics of the prototype structure were obtained via finite element analysis. Then, the coupling effect between the lashing bridge and hull structure was considered and analysed. Secondly, the scaled model of the lashing bridge, hull structure and container stack was constructed by Similarity Theory and finite element analysis. Lastly, several experiments (static and dynamic) and numerical simulations were conducted, and the experiment results were compared with the finite element analysis. It reveals that the numerical model built is a promising tool, and the coupling effect of the hull structure on the lashing bridge cannot be ignored. Moreover, the mechanical behaviour of the full-scale lashing bridge can be conveniently derived from the scaled model.
