Abstract
The paper discusses a series of plane strain tests undertaken on Shanghai silty clay under consolidated undrained conditions to investigate the formation of shear bands. Four deformation transducers were installed on both sides of the specimens. Based on the observed deviator stress versus vertical strain curves and lateral strain versus vertical strain curves, the shear band formation can be divided into four phases: initial bifurcation, peak stress, shear band completion, and residual strength. Four shear band shapes were distinguished: single type, ‘X’ type, wedge type and sub-single type.
