Abstract

Abstract A description is provided for Exophiala jeanselmei . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS AND SUBSTRATA: Man, pig. Dead wood of Pinus banksia, Quercus sp., Picea abies, Acerpseudoplatanus , also from the soil and rhizosphere of potato and wheat (Domsch et al. , 1980). DISEASE: An agent of mycetoma of man with irregular black grains, generally affecting the foot or leg, occasionally the hand or arm, more often in men than in women (RMVM 6, 419; 7, 3896; 8, 783; 9, 1218; 15, 1986). Exophiala jeanselmei was reported as associated with a case of porcine abortion in USA (17, 1112). Experimental mycetoma was produced in the mouse (11, 1939). GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: World-wide. Most medical reports are from warmer regions, whilst most records of non-pathogenic strains are from Europe and N. America.
