Abstract

The high exo : endo rate and product ratios in the solvolysis of 2-norbornyl derivatives has long been considered a unique characteristic that required a unique explanation—σ-bridging.1,2 Now that it has been observed that reactions involving the highly stabilized 2-p-anisyl-2-norbornyl and 2-p-anisyl-2-camphenilyl cations exhibit equally high exo : endo rate and product ratios (Chapter 7), it is necessary to explore explanations other than σ-bridging as a basis for these characteristics.
