Abstract

This review deals with excitation dynamics in organic molecules, solids, fullerenes and polymers and various nonlinear optical techniques to probe them. For the benefit of readers not familiar with excitations in organic materials, a brief review of nature of molecular eigenstates and collective excitations in organic solids is presented. This “Fundamental” section is followed by a description of nonlinear optical interactions. Various nonlinear optical techniques using ultrafast laser pulses are discussed under “Experimental Techniques”. Then “selected results” are presented to illustrate the application of these techniques. Finally, to encourage involvements of new researchers in this rich field, the review concludes with a discussion of new opportunities for research.KeywordsHigh Occupied Molecular OrbitalLower Unoccupied Molecular OrbitalProbe BeamTransient AbsorptionNonlinear Optical ResponseThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
