Examining the Contribution of Protected Area-Based Tourism to Sustainable Development Goals
This paper examines the contribution of protected area-based tourism to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at Lake Malawi National Park in Malawi, focusing on environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Adopting a qualitative exploratory cross-sectional design within an interpretive paradigm, the research engaged diverse stakeholders to explore tourism’s contribution to SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 14 (Life Below Water), and 15 (Life on Land). The findings reveal that protected area-based tourism enhances local livelihoods by creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, facilitates biodiversity conservation through tourism operators and community-led initiatives, and supports the ecological health of Lake Malawi through sustainable tourism practices. Moreover, the study underscores the critical role of local community participation in tourism development and conservation, reinforcing the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental sustainability. By integrating these dimensions, Lake Malawi National Park serves as a model for leveraging tourism as a tool for sustainable development. The study calls for sustained investment in protected area-based tourism to maximize its benefits and ensure equitable distribution of tourism-generated resources, ultimately driving progress towards the SDGs and fostering long-term conservation and community resilience.

The participation of residents plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable development of tourism in rural community. This study proposes a novel concept, namely community-based psychological ownership (C-PO) and examines its dimensionality and association with community participation in rural tourism. The scale of C-PO was developed through 4 stages. In Stage 1, initial item pool with 25 items is generated based on a qualitative study from Shangchengdai and Dachen Village in Zhejiang, China. Through Stage 2 and Stage 3, a 23-item six-dimensional scale is confirmed using data collected in two on-site surveys (n = 93, n = 416) at Maoyang Township, Zhejiang. In Study 4, using survey data (n = 485) collected from Heyang Village and Maoyang Township, Zhejiang, the relationships between C-PO and community participation in rural tourism development are examined. The results indicate that self-identity, self-efficacy, community responsibility and community belongingness have positive effects on community participation, while community possession and territoriality have a non-significant and negative impact, respectively. Recommendations are provided for better encouraging community participation in tourism development by managing residents’ psychological ownership towards their communities.

Community participation in tourism development has gained significant attention in recent years. While ample research has investigated how the community participated in developing tourism destinations and their industries, little is known about what factors, motivations and contributions of the community participating in the development of marine ecotourism. To fill the void, the present study conducts a qualitative systematic review of how community participation contributes to the development of marine ecotourism. The papers were included in the SCOPUS and WOS databases published between 2011 and 2021. In this study, the papers were selected using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. The keywords include “community participation”, “marine ecotourism” and “qualitative”. From 244, 12 articles matched the objective of the study and the keywords. Using thematic analysis, this systematic review discovers the factors, types, and outcomes of community participation in developing marine ecotourism. Additionally, the synthesis has revealed three challenges of community participation in marine ecotourism such as lack of training, local government support, and sociocultural awareness. This study significantly contributes to empirical considerations when involving the coastal community in planning and developing sustainable marine ecotourism.

This research work conducted a study that sought to prove the connection between the implementation of social and environmental sustainability with the profitability of enterprises and the creation of economic added value. Expressing social and environmental sustainability as numerical indicators is quite undefined, because companies in Croatia do not have a legal obligation to state them in their business reports and notes. It is just a measure to improve and raise business and market ratings. Therefore, for this research, data on social and environmental sustainability as measurable variables were obtained after a survey conducted among employees and company management on a sample of 126 Croatian companies. The obtained measurable variables for environmental and social sustainability were ultimately put into comparative analysis with the company’s profitability indicators and the created economic added value. This research obtained data that there is a connection between environmental and social sustainability with the profitability of the company and the creation of economic added value, but it is extremely small, social sustainability 0.212 and environmental sustainability 0.243.

ABSTRACTThe United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize the integration of environmental, social, and economic sustainability into business operations to foster positive societal impact. While environmental sustainability has been widely studied, social sustainability in consumer behavior remains underexplored, with existing research scattered and fragmented. This gap makes it challenging to extract meaningful insights and develop a cohesive understanding of the field. To address this gap, the paper systematically synthesizes the available literature on the brand social sustainability domain and consumer behavior by reviewing 90 papers published between 2009 and 2024. This study employs the SPAR 4 protocol and TCCM framework to conduct the domain‐based systematic literature review. Further, a bibliometric analysis is conducted using R Studio, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer, along with a systematic thematic analysis. The systematic thematic analysis uncovers five key themes: brand outcomes of social sustainability, artificial intelligence and brand social sustainability, communicating and marketing socially sustainable brands, brand social sustainability in achieving sustainable development, and consumer behavior and perceptions of brand social sustainability. Additionally, content analysis is employed to examine theoretical perspectives, contextual factors, key variables, and methodological approaches, offering valuable insights into the knowledge dimensions of this field. By consolidating fragmented research, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of brand social sustainability and provides a roadmap for future research, ultimately promoting responsible, ethical, and inclusive business practices. The study also suggests theoretical and managerial implications to contribute meaningfully to the domain of brand social sustainability.

Destination Management Systems (DMS) are Information Communication Technology (ICT) based tools that were first created with a marketing and booking focus. DMS functions mainly focus on relaying destination images and providing relevant booking information through destination websites as their front end. More recently, policymakers and researchers have seen the potential for DMS to foster sustainable tourism outcomes through effective destination management. This research argues that DMS can help to empower local communities to engage in tourism development and create stakeholder networks that can facilitate more sustainable forms of tourism development. This research will investigate how DMS worldwide, specifically in Indonesia, can empower community participation in tourism development. A major contribution of this work will be the development and provision of a set of criteria for a community-focused DMS. This research is divided into two stages. The first stage focuses on investigating community dimensions in DMS practice globally and in Indonesia. The Motivation – Opportunity – Ability (MOA) model will be used to identify the DMS functions that can empower the community to participate in tourism development. The second stage of the research has two objectives: investigating the strategic reasons behind DMS design and formulating evaluation criteria of the study cases that emerge from the prior stage. Semi-structured interviews and the Delphi Method will be utilised to address the objectives, respectively. This research contributes to the academic discourse on the interrelation between Tourism, ICT and sustainable community-focused development. From a practical perspective, the outcomes of this research will enhance destination management practice by providing a new avenue to foster community participation in tourism development processes. In the upcoming presentation, I will present the research methods and early research findings, which mainly come from the web evaluation process in the first stage of this research. The presentation will also share the following process of the research.

Collaboration and community participation are crucial for securing sustainable tourism and highlight the need to listen and respond to the broad range of stakeholders’ voices, opinions, and concerns. These concepts dominated the discourse of sustainable-responsible tourism and gave rise to collaboration theory as well as various types of community participation. Many scholars in both Western and emerging economies have employed these concepts; however, there is limited research on how they apply in the Nigerian tourism industry. Therefore, this exploratory research discusses collaboration and community participation in tourism development in Nigeria, using the Southeastern region as a case study. In this area, tourism is in the early phase of growth. The paper reports on interviews and focus group discussions used to interact with tourism stakeholders in the region (traditional rulers, men, women, and youth representatives, chief priests, security agents, and tourism officials). Results showed that while the stakeholders are willing to collaborate, challenges affecting their efforts include autocratic governance structures leading to mistrust, clash of responsibilities, inadequate funding for security, lack of tourism awareness and little respect for local culture. The paper concludes that to develop a resident-friendly tourism destination and sustain collaboration and community participation, stakeholders require education about tourism and opportunities to participate in planning.
