Abstract
The cottoids – Batrachocottus multiradiatus, Asprocottus herzensteini, Cyphocottus megalops, Limnocottus bergianus and Limnocottus pallidus are bottom eurybathic species in Lake Baikal, which reside under similar light conditions. All have mixed rod–cone retinas. However, B. multiradiatus and C. megalops have more developed cone vision, whereas A. herzensteini, L. bergianus and L. pallidus have scotopic vision as predominant. Differences in retinal structure of these species, living under almost the same conditions of luminosity, suggest they colonized deep water at different periods in the long history of Baikal.
