Abstract
An exhaustive field study of complex minor fold structures has been directed at a better understanding of the individual fold-like features of a complex structure, to gain insight into their development and into the evolution of the major folds. It has been found conceivable and in practice, enlightening to explain complexity by the retention of geometrical features from an earlier stage of deformation within the same folding phase. Irregularities in fold and layer geometry were, whenever possible, interpreted as intact or modified relicts from such an earlier stage. Results of experimental work on fold development have been used as an aid in interpretation.
