Abstract

Qualitative evidence of low frequency genetic recombination has been obtained following mixed infection of pig kidney cells with immunologically distinct strains of FMDV. Using various selective procedures it was possible to isolate from progeny virus a number of strains recombinant in terms of their unselected markers. The occasional segregation of variant clones from single-plaque isolates suggested that a transient state of heterozygosity was associated with the formation of recombinants.
