Abstract

The evangelization of Mexico is a good case study in inculturation. This article presents the challenges, obstacles, and unexpected events that led to the birth of the new church in Mexico. It traces the principal elements of the native religious culture, presents the efforts to proclaim the gospel through their symbolic world, and Our Lady of Guadalupe as the unexpected event that led to the implantation of the gospel in Mexican soil.
