Abstract

Aluminum 5154 matrix is reinforced with SiC and TiB2 of weight fractions 5% each and composites are prepared. Stir casting method is used to manufacture these composites. Tribological properties of the composites are determined. The reinforcement in the composite will effect the properties like wear, corrosion and hardness which are evaluated. Silicon carbide Aluminum 5154 composite exhibited better corrosion and hardness properties than TiB2 Al554 composite. Titanium diboride silicon carbide Al5154 composite exhibited excellent wear properties. Micro structural studies are conducted to predict the corrosion effect for the fabricated specimens. Al5154 with SiC composite may be recommended for the marine applications where better corrosion and hardness properties are needed. Al5154 Metal matrix composites offer sufficient promise for light weight structures and also for marine applications.
