Abstract

This paper describes an experimental study concerning the feasibility of using bio-oil namely turmeric leaves based oil obtained from the resin of turmeric plants. The emission and performance characteristics of a 4-stroke spark ignited engine were studied by using gasoline and turmeric leaves oil. The performance and emission parameters of both the fuels were evaluated and compared. The performance parameters investigated were torque, brake mean effective pressure (BMEP), brake power, specific fuel consumption (SFC), and thermal efficiency. Carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOX) exhaust emissions levels are also presented. The results showed that torque and BMEP were slightly lower when the turmeric leaves bio-fuel was used as fuel as compare to gasoline on all engine speeds.
