A Systematic Review of Humor Employed in Teaching English as a Second Language in Asia
  • Apr 1, 2024
  • Sage Open
  • Zhou Tianli + 3 more

In recent times, the number of studies examining the use of humor in teaching English as a second language (ESL) in Asian countries has increased as researchers have acknowledged the positive effects that humor has on language teaching. This study presents a systematic review focused on the use of humor in ESL teaching within Asian countries. Its objectives are to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the current research status, research participants and methods, and research perspectives, and to examine the outcomes of incorporating humor into ESL instruction in Asian contexts in order to pinpoint research gaps for future studies. This study included the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (2020). Moreover, 35 articles relevant to the use of humor in Asian ESL teaching were identified as of the date when this study was conducted. After performing content analysis, the findings revealed that the first related articles in Asia were published in 2009, after which more and more articles emerged. These studies took place in 14 Asian countries, with most of them focusing on Turkey, Iran, and Indonesia. In addition, they involve diverse research methods and perspectives, whilst most of the participants are university students. This suggests that humor is more suitable for use when teaching high-proficiency English learners. Moreover, humor is a double-edged sword that has positive and negative impacts on ESL teaching in Asian countries. Finally, a number of recommendations for future studies have been proposed in this study.

Methodology Challenges in the Study of Social Capital in Asia
  • Jan 1, 2012
  • Gordon Redding + 1 more

Purpose – This chapter examines the challenges in exploring, analysing and developing the concept of social capital, seen as the proclivity (or otherwise) of societies to engender stable structures for cooperativeness that support economic exchange and control. The authors focus on Asia and outline a theory of researchable social capital elements. Methodology is considered against the contexts of Asia. The authors emphasize the role of higher education as determinant, seeing it as crucial to the accumulation of human capital and often at the centre of many theories of societal progress.Findings – The authors’ findings are that social capital is a contested concept that does not rest within a bed of widely adopted theory; researching it comparatively requires acknowledging societal meaning structures; there is emerging acceptance of complexity theory, evolutionary dynamics, and multi-disciplinary analysis; it is possible to disaggregate the concept into researchable issues; many research methods are available.Implications – Modes of human cooperativeness are crucial for the understanding and comparison of economic systems. Implications are strong and pervasive for policy and practice. The authors find no evidence of a distinct indigenous ‘Asian’ perspective in research but much evidence of powerful contributions from Asian scholars working collaboratively with colleagues internationally.Originality/Value – The chapter provides a helicopter perspective of an emerging field, notes conceptual challenges and gives practical guidance for researchers.

Addressing research challenges: making headway for developing researchers
  • Jan 1, 2016
  • South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science
  • Stephen Mutula

The book, Addressing research challenges: making headway for developing researchers , edited by E.R. Mathipa and M.T. Gumbo, is a rich, intellectual, authoritative and comprehensive piece of scholarly work that fills a lacuna in research methods from the African perspective. The book is aimed at developing researchers, especially postgraduate students, whom the authors recognise struggle in undertaking academic research. Scholars and academics who are generally involved in supervising and examining postgraduate theses/dissertations and teaching research methodology courses will find the book useful, illuminating and provocative. Addressing research challenges has a definite place in an African research methodology space, where the majority of texts used are founded on western epistemologies, and will most likely appeal to an audience in a wide range of disciplines. The chapters in the book are written by experts in their respective academic fields who have immense hands-on experience in teaching and/or managing research, accumulated over several years and across different disciplines such as education, management, governance, records management, research ethics, research methods, sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, and others. The book is simple to read and compact to carry around. It comprises eleven chapters covering pertinent subjects such as the postgraduate research journey; academic writing; generic components of a research proposal; conceptual and theoretical frameworks (and their utility in quantitative and qualitative research); review of literature in research; ethics and research; quantitative and qualitative data analysis; mixed methods research; writing a dissertation or thesis; and referencing in research projects. Within these broad themes, the authors have addressed key issues that are of common concern to postgraduate students in their research journey, especially at Master’s and PhD levels. The chapters in the book are logically ordered and each chapter starts with an introduction and ends with a conclusion and references, thus enhancing the coherence of the content presented in the book. The authors have greatly simplified and demystified aspects of the research process that many new researchers find challenging, such as using statistics to analyse, interpret and present both descriptive and inferential data; the use of theory to develop research questions, analyse data and interpret findings; the distinction between and application of conceptual and theoretical frameworks in research; and philosophical underpinning of research problems. The authors have also aptly addressed the often-neglected subjects in most research methods books, such as supervisor-supervisee relationship, time management and language issues. The book is well-illustrated and impressive in its layout, structure, organisation and clarity. The index of words, along with a comprehensive table of contents, makes it easier for the reader to find each piece of information in the text. This book is no doubt a highly intellectual piece of scholarly work. Nevertheless, further illumination on the level of expectation as far as depth and rigor in undertaking a Master’s and PhD research project would have further benefitted the target audience. Future revisions of the book may also need to consider providing a list of definitions of key concepts that most postgraduate students often misinterpret and misrepresent in writing their research projects, such as ‘paradigm’, ‘research perspectives’, ‘epistemology’, ‘axiology’ and more. In addition, future revisions should address editorial omissions and commissions that have gone undetected in this text. The release of this book is timely for postgraduate students and academics involved in research activities in the African tertiary education environment and the broader developing country contexts. The book is likely to elicit robust debate and engagement among researchers. The strengths of the book are founded on the fact that it is authored by highly cross-disciplinary intellectual experts; it addresses research issues that are pertinent to postgraduate research supervision, examination and management; authors have drawn on practical examples and illustrations from across the world giving the book an international appeal; and the book is written in language that is simple to read and understand. The book therefore occupies and fills a unique gap on the shelves of research methodology books, especially from the African perspective. This is a book any budding researcher and postgraduate student will want to read.

A Review on Western Studies on the Socialist Transformation in China
  • Jan 1, 2022
  • Chinese Studies
  • Ting Zhang

Based on the literature analysis of the research on China’s socialist transformation in Western academia, this paper briefly reviews the historical status of Western academia’s research since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, taking the normalization of China-US relations as the node time. The study on China’s socialist transformation has experienced more than half a century of development, showing its own unique characteristics. Due to the influence of their own cultural concepts, ideologies, research paradigms and research methods, Western scholars’ understanding of relevant issues inevitably shows some one-sided and arbitrary perspectives. However, the novelty of Western scholars’ research perspectives, the diversification of data sources, and the interdisciplinary comprehensive research methods have certain reference significance for China’s domestic academia to further advance the research on socialist transformation.

Still Searching for Understanding: The Importance of Diverse Research Designs, Methods, and Perspectives
  • Aug 24, 2022
  • American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology
  • Roberta J Elman

Evidence-based medicine and evidence hierarchies have been widely adopted and have strongly influenced decision making across many fields, including clinical aphasiology. However, questions remain about the creation, usefulness, and validity of current evidence hierarchies. This article builds on ideas about scientific approaches and evidence originally shared by Elman (1995, 1998, 2006). This article reviews the history of evidence hierarchies and argues that improving the diversity of research designs, methods, and perspectives will improve understanding of the numerous and complex variables associated with aphasia intervention. Researchers and clinicians are encouraged to synthesize diverse types of scientific evidence. It is hoped that this article will stimulate thought and foster discussion in order to encourage high-caliber research of all types. Concepts from a wide variety of fields including philosophy of science, research design and methodology, and precision medicine are brought together in an attempt to focus research on the scientific understanding of aphasia treatment effects. It is hoped that by incorporating diverse research designs, methods, and perspectives, clinical aphasiologists will become better able to provide effective, personalized treatments, ensuring that each person with aphasia is able to improve their communication ability and quality of life.

A Pesquisa Histórica em Administração: uma Proposta para Práticas de Pesquisa
  • Jan 2, 2019
  • Administração: Ensino e Pesquisa
  • Alessandra De Sá Mello Da Costa + 1 more

  • Xingwang Li + 4 more

PurposeThis study aims to let researchers sort out the past, look to the future and boost further management research.Design/methodology/approachThis paper takes the exploration of the application of AR in the field of management research as the starting point. Through the combing and induction of AR literature to accurately grasp the essential characteristics of AR, this paper analyzes the application prospects and possible difficulties of AR in the field of management research in China, puts forward specific suggestions and explores the specific path of the transformation of management academic research to practice from the perspective of research methods.FindingsIn research methods, empirical research and case studies have become the mainstream research methods, but there is a passive research limitation of “study what happens.” Action research is different from the standpoint of empirical research that is independent of the research object. It no longer simply treats managers as the “object of information acquisition,” but as the subject of participating in the research. Management should be oriented towards the transformation of practice, and action research (AR) that can organically integrate researchers and practitioners is just a “bridge” to break the gap between academia and business circles to establish a cooperative relationship.Originality/valueThis paper takes the exploration of the application of AR in the field of management research as the starting point. Board Diversity and R&D Investment: An Evidence from China
  • Jan 1, 2025
  • SHS Web of Conferences
  • Yunqi He

Innovation plays a crucial role in the survival and development of enterprises, and the investment in research and development (R&D) projects, as the core indicator for measuring innovation investment, has attracted much attention. In recent years, in order to explore the key factors that affect corporate innovation, scholars’ research perspectives have gradually focused on the level of corporate governance. This article uses empirical research methods to deeply analyze the intrinsic relationship between board diversity and research and development expenditures. The research results show that board diversity has a significant impact on R&D investment. Specifically, the negative impact of gender and age diversity is more prominent, while educational background diversity shows a clear positive driving effect. In addition, this article also found that board diversity often plays a role in inhibiting R&D investment in small-scale enterprises, while it can play a stronger promoting role in large-scale enterprises. The results of this article not only enrich the research in related fields such as upper echelons theory but also provide important references for corporate governance practice.
