Abstract

Computer aided detection (CAD) in mammography has been regarded as a possible solution to the manpower problems faced by the National Health Service breast screening programme (NHSBSP). The development of CAD and research undertaken in the UK is reviewed. Evidence from retrospective studies needs to be re-assessed in the prospective setting of the screening programme to fully evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of using CAD in the NHSBSP.
