Abstract

The energy labelling of household refrigerators and freezers first became mandatory in the State of New South Wales in 1986, and in Victoria in 1987. Since then the electrical appliance energy labelling program has been extended to dishwashers, air conditioners, clothes dryers and clothes washers, and has been adopted in Australia’ s other States and Territories. There is a separate voluntary energy labelling program for gas water heaters, space heaters and central heaters. In 1995 the national, State and Territory governments agreed to implement MEPS for refrigerators and freezers, and for electric storage water heaters. These are to take effect on 1 October 1999. At present no other types of household electrical appliances are being seriously considered for labelling or MEPS, although programs are currently being considered for electric motors, fluorescent lamp ballasts and larger packaged air conditioners.
