Abstract

Heart failure (HF) management is complex, and requires vigilant monitoring to guide therapeutic interventions. Self-care (SC) behaviours, including recognizing signs and symptoms of HF, timely response to changes in symptoms and knowing whom to contact for advice, are fundamental elements of HF management. Although SC behaviours have been shown to reduce hospitalizations, and are endorsed by HF programs, many HF patients have poor SC and consensus regarding the optimal method of delivering SC education is lacking. Patient teaching modalities such as teach back (TB) may be effective in improving SC in this population.
