Abstract

Research conducted over the past 20 years in psychology, voice science, kinesiology, and neuroscience shows promising results in establishing the potential of breath management, attentional focus, and somatic disciplines to enhance the ability of individuals to function effectively under intense and often stressful performance circumstances. Many of these approaches have been incorporated into the training of performing artists for centuries, and among diverse cultures. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Techniques, and Fitzmaurice Voicework®, employ such techniques, and a study investigating their efficacy in alleviating performance anxiety and enhancing focus may provide information that will help us to further refine our actor training methods.
