Abstract

An innovative course has been developed and implemented to enable midwives to extend their role in the postnatal period. This is in response to the challenge for midwives to enhance their public health role. On completion of the course participants felt that they had developed practical strategies about where and how to improve the quality of postnatal care, up to and including the 6–week postnatal examination. This article reviews and evaluates this course and makes some suggestions for future developments for both education and practice.
