Abstract

We present the first evidence that the energy level of Eu2+ ground state is located within the ZnSe forbidden gap, approximately 2.1 eV below the bottom of the conduction band (CB). The photo-ESR and photoluminescence experiments have been performed on high-resistivity ZnSe:Eu crystals. After illuminating the sample with hv>1.9 eV light a quenching of the intensity of Eu2+ ESR signal has been observed, i.e. the concentration of Eu2+ centers was found to decrease due to Eu2++hv→Eu3++eCB photoionization transition.
