Mothers' Perspectives of the Peer-Related Social Development of Young Children with Developmental Delays and Communication Disorders
  • Jan 1, 2002
  • Early Education and Development
  • Michael J Guralnick + 3 more

Mothers' perspectives of children's peer-related social development were obtained from matched groups of young children with developmental delays, communicative disorders, and typically developing children. Structured interviews elicited information on numerous issues including mothers' views of the importance of children's social skills development, rationales with respect to why children succeed or had difficulties on specific social tasks, and the socialization strategies mothers employ to promote children's peer-related social development. Mothers also reported on their efforts to arrange play with peers for their child and the degree to which they monitored that play. Results indicated that mothers rated children's social development as highly important, offered primarily internal rationales (e.g., traits, dispositions) for success or difficulties in achieving social tasks, and endorsed moderate and low power socialization strategies. Differences across the three groups were minimal. Mothers arranged play with peers least often for children with developmental delays and communication disorders, but monitored play more extensively for children with delays. These finding were discussed in terms of mothers adopting a developmental orientation to understand children's social development and their implications for maternal participation in peer competence intervention programs.

  • Ivan Mitrović + 3 more

Socialization is not just training an individual for social life and his future role in society, but it is very important for personality formation, which is formed through learning with certain characteristics, and thus becomes a member of one culture [1]. Conflicts in the family, inconsistent discipline, affective cold, parents' hostility, poor monitoring and non-inclusion of parents in the everyday life of a minor, but also his psychological and emotional state, as well as crime and alcoholism in the family can be important factors, causers and triggers of the appearance of delinquent behaviour. The research was conducted for the duration of one school year, and it is represented by the central, southern and northern regions of Montenegro, in integrated departments at regular schools (PI Primary school 'Ilija Kisic' Herceg Novi, PI Primary school 'Vuk Karadzic' Berane, PI Primary school 'Dusan Korac' Bijelo Polje, PI Primary school 'Njegos' Kotor, PI Primary school 'Bosko Buha' Pljevlja, PI Primary school 'Olga Golovic' Niksic and PI Primary school 'Yugoslavia' Bar. Starting from the nature, essence and importance of the defined problem, the subject of our study is focused on the social development of children with disabilities, as well as on the influence of social development on the presence of problematic behaviour. The most significant results of this research, and we think that they have an impact on the social development of the child are: the fact that 23% of children grew up, lived and formed a socio-emotional status with their parent, who was not in the marital union of another child's parent. Parent's education: the most frequent is secondary school with 45.5%, and the number of parents with non-completed primary school is relatively high with 14.5%. A significant number of parents of children with disabilities are unemployed (fathers 26.4%, mothers 60.0%). We can conclude that economic characteristic can be very unfavourable for the functioning of the family. Our research shows that there are quarrels between 51.8% of parents. Regarding the presence of psychological violence against children with disabilities, we have concluded that in 14.5% of children there are indications of experiencing some form of psychological violence. The quarrel between parents, as a serious disorder in the social and overall development of children with disabilities, are expressed as a problem in the amount of 23.6% and there are indications that they reach up to 33.7%. So we can say that the presence of this problem is high. It is not negligible that 40% of children with disabilities have an inadequate relation towards teachers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has an impact on patterns of social interaction, education, and behavior on child development. Children with social development problems need good readiness from their parents in order to carry out their optimal growth functions. Parental readiness is one of the mitigation strategies to reduce the negative impact of COVID-19. The purpose of this research is to explore how parents are prepared for their children's social development after the COVID-19 emergency, in the Jember Regency. This research method uses qualitative research with a phenomenological design involving 7 parents in the Jember Regency area. The research instrument used a design theory from Prochaska, namely the transtheoretical model for parental preparation and Hurlock's theory, namely the ability to behave in accordance with social demands for children's social development. Data analysis used the induction method with specific conclusions drawn for the general public and presented descriptively. Parents have prepared and facilitated children's needs, learning environment, and provided motivation to children in their development period. Some parents admit that they have difficulty adjusting to their child's development. This is different from parents as housewives who have a lot of time with their children who claim that they understand their child's condition and can adapt to their child's development. Parents also provide time for their children to talk about their activities in their environment and limit their use of gadgets and replace them with other games that can stimulate their motor and sensory. The readiness of parents in the social development of children in the post-COVID-19 emergency shows positive results. Parents are well prepared to support their children's social development.

  • Wathu, Winnie Mwatha + 2 more

This paper presents the findings on availability and use of play materials in play and their influence on social and emotional development of pre-school children in Kyangwithya zone, Kitui County, Kenya. Within this broad aim, the paper provides a better understanding on the importance of play materials, as a catalyst for play, which further enhances social and emotional development. The development of this study was influenced by various concerns of educational stakeholders as to whether pre-schoolers were provided with enough play materials and how these play materials promoted play and social and emotional development. The data collection methods involved questionnaires and observation schedules. A total of 9 pre-schools, 75 preschoolers and 6 teachers were involved in the study. The selection was done through purposive sampling and simple random sampling. It was found out that majority of the schools had play materials. However, these materials were not adequate for the children, hence this did not support variety that promote and stimulate prolonged play, which enhances social and emotional development. Also, there was a strong positive correlation (r=+0.75) between availability of play materials and social development of children and a significant difference (p<0.05). These means that if there is more variety of play materials and are well used, the children are likely to have good social and emotional development. The paper recommends that the schools should provide more varied assortment of play material to pre-school children as this is likely to improve their social and emotional development. On the whole, the study’s findings are seen to be of particular relevance to curriculum developers, administrators and teachers in Kenya.

  • Apr 1, 1995
  • Early Education & Development
  • Susan H Peet

This exploratory study examined parental perceptions of the information sources parents use when wanting or needing information about their three-year-old child's motor, social, and cognitive development. Specifically, this study compared parental perceptions of the use of internal information sources (i.e., parents' own intuitions about development, religious beliefs/teachings, and childhood experiences) to perceptions of the use of external information sources (i.e., books, magazines, counselors, etc.). Further, this study examined differences in parental perceptions of use of internal information sources by parent and child gender, and by developmental domain (i.e., information about a child's motor, social, and cognitive development). Sixty mothers and 60 fathers of a three-year-old child completed an information use structured interview. Findings revealed that almost half of the parents reported referring to their own intuitions, religious beliefs/teachings, and/or childhood experiences as sources of information about their child's development. Parents perceived the internal information sources as being used significantly more frequently and as significantly more useful for information about their child's social development than for information about their child's motor and cognitive development.
