Abstract
Subject Economic development and political violence in India's north-east states. Significance The announcement last month of Japanese investment in India’s north-eastern states signals a new ‘economic deal’ for the region and reflects deepening India-China rivalry around the two countries’ disputed border. India’s north-east frequently sees ethnic violence involving different tribal and migrant groups. Impacts Delhi and Tokyo may step up plans for an Asia Africa Growth Corridor. India may agree further investment deals with Bangladesh and Nepal, seeking to distance its neighbours from China. The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, linking India and Myanmar, may face further delays.
