Abstract

Abstract In their daily practice, in what ever field and certainly in child care, social workers are constantly having to make choices in situations pervaded by conflict and uncertainty. Professional training aims to provide practitioners with skills, knowledge and values which can help to deal with such situations. This article will suggest that to date inadequate attention has been given to integrating values into practice. It goes on to argue that the Children Order will present practitioners with ethical dilemmas requiring an explicit approacli to applying moral principles. A critical incident from the Jasmine Beckford case is used to demonstrate five typical value conflicts and to present a four step approach to promoting more ethically informed and thereby better child care.
