Abstract
Ethics for the failure analyst are essential, but unfortunately, not derived from any list of rules and laws. Ethics are derived from a personal commitment to do the right thing at the right time for the right price. Too frequently, we must compromise. There will be facts we need but don’t have, tests we should have done but lack the resources to accomplish. There may even be different descriptions of what happened. For us to “do right” we must “think right,” and one aid for right thinking is the realization that ethical behavior is that behavior which results from a deepened understanding, in the presence of compassion, of the potential consequences of our actions and inactions.
