Abstract

The complex pore system plays a significant role in estimating the S‐wave velocity in carbonate rocks. In the pore systems, the microcracks would induce anisotropic in carbonate rocks, so an anisotropic effective medium model is needed. Here we follow the method of estimating pore types given by Kumar and Han. For the presence of microcracks, considering the anisotropy in the rock, we use the Eshelby‐Cheng model and Brown‐Korringa equations to predict the P‐wave and S‐wave velocities of the saturated rock. Without microcracks, modified Xu‐White model is used to predict the P‐wave and S‐wave velocities of isotropic saturated rock. The results calculated from the method are accurate which show the efficiency of the estimation.
