Abstract

With the purpose to estimate adiposity, a cross sectional randomly design including 196 schoolchildren (5–9 years) was carried out. 99 (50.5%) were females and the weight was between the 10th and 90th percentile. Variables as age, gender, and percent of body fat (%BF) obtained by Slaughter, Lohman and Durnin equations, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) were estimated. A student T test and Kruskal Wallis test were obtained. Differences in %BF by Slaughter (22.9±10.4 vs. 26.9±8.8) was higher in females (p=0.004) and by Lohman (27.8±11.3 vs. 24.7±8.9) higher in males (p=<0.039). With a stratification among age groups (5–6, 7–8 and 9 y), differences in %BF in boys by BIA (19.1 ±7.2, 23.9±9.5, 24.1±13.8) and Lohman (25.4±12, 29.4±11, 28.9±10) were not significant. Differences in %BF by Slaughter (19.1±8.5, 24.6±9.9, 28.6±14.1) and Durnin (20.5±7.8, 25.8±8.7, 26.8±10) were gradually increased by age (p = 0.012 and p = 0.016). In girls, %BF among equations was closer and higher than boys, and, higher in older than younger girls. By BIA (20.2±9.7, 22.3±10, 27.6±7.6), p = 0.072; by Lohman (22.4±9.1, 24.7±8.5, 32.6±5.5), p = 0.004; by Slaughter (25.1±8.6, 26.7±9.0, 33.8±5.6), p = 0.008; by Durnin (24.1±8.6, 24.5±9.6, 32.5±7.5), p = 0.023. There were differences in adiposity by sex with equations. BIA, Slaughter and Durnin equations seem to reflect better changes in adiposity at this age in normal weight children.
