Abstract

A new estimate of the phase of the geomagnetic response of the Earth at low frequencies (from 0.033 to 0.25 cycles per day) has been derived from an analysis of unbroken sequences of hourly values for the period 1964–1965. The source of the discrepancies between previously published estimates is explained and verified in terms of the quantity and quality of the data used as well as the quality of the data analysis techniques applied. The main conclusion is that, over the mentioned frequency range, the phase is essentially constant with a mean of 165°.
