Abstract
Based on the examinations we see a possibility of introducing alternative landuse systems. A certain part of the mostly grain growing lands with weak productivity could be used for short rotation energy plantations. The conditions for the introduction of these plantations are given in the area. The biomass plantations established for wood chips production purposes provide an economic alternative for the farmers of less favoured agricultural areas. However environmental impacts are to be studied and sustainable structures to be established forsuccessful long term operations.
