Abstract

A significant number of right holder parents do not choose the French-language school system for their children. Moreover, even when parents choose a French elementary school, there are many adolescents who choose, either alone or with their family, to leave the Francophone system during the transition to high school. In the last few decades, several researchers and educators from Ontario labeled francophone students who choose to attend an English school as “cultural dropouts”, an expression which seems to imply a rejection of the French language and culture entirely. Is this new expression appropriate?
