ESG ratings and innovation performance of listed companies in China - based on tests of mediating and regulating effects
This paper empirically examines the impact of ESG ratings on the innovation performance of Chinese listed companies from 2010 to 2022. The results show that improvements in the ESG ratings are significantly beneficial to the innovation performance of enterprises in the next year. Moreover, corporation age, power concentration, liquidity, the proportion of independent directors, the leverage ratio and the book-to-market value are conducive to the adjustment effect of ESG ratings. Especially, corporate profitability can play a positive mediating role, but corporate growth plays a negative role. Furthermore, competitive level actively enhances the innovation performance and profitability of enterprises. However, the pursuit of high ESG scores can incentivise monopolistic enterprises to innovate. In addition, the marginal effect of ESG investment on polluting enterprises is stronger than that on clean enterprises and that the effect on private enterprises is stronger than that on government-owned enterprises.

The present paper assesses the effect of the formation of cluster organisations on the innovation performance of member enterprises in two different industriesthe traditional textile manufacturing industry and the new nanotechnology industry. Innovation performance is explored using Data Envelopment Analysis in two phases. In the first phase, it examines the ability of enterprises to transform resources (labour force, long-term capital, intellectual capital) into registered industrial property rights: patents, utility models, industrial designs, and trademarks. In the second phase, it assesses the ability of enterprises to commercialise industrial property rights and generate profits. Innovation performance then integrates both phases. In each industry, two samples were assessed: member enterprises of cluster organisations, and enterprises that operate in the same industry and region but are not members of a cluster organisation. The results of the research show that the existence of a cluster organisation has a greater effect on innovation performance in the traditional textile manufacturing industry. In contrast, in the new nanotechnology industry, the existence of a cluster organisation did not prove to have any significant effect on innovation effectiveness. In this industry, the existence of a cluster organisation had only a partial effect related to better industrial property rights commercialisation. Research shows that the type of industry is an important factor in the innovation performance of clustered enterprises.

Wang, X. and Qi, Y., 2020. The impact of institutional distance on innovation performance of OFDI Enterprises: Comparison of coastal and inland regions in China. In: Gong, D.; Zhang, M., and Liu, R. (eds.), Advances in Coastal Research: Engineering, Industry, Economy, and Sustainable Development. Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 106, pp. 166–170. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) has a certain impact on enterprises' innovation performance through the reverse technology spillover effect. However, China's OFDI is not unevenly distributed, and the OFDI of the coastal economically developed regions has the highest proportion. The large institutional distance between the home country and the host country also affects the effect of OFDI reverse technology spillover on enterprises' innovation performance. This paper uses the moderated multiple regression model to analyze the moderate effects of institutional distance on the relationship between OFDI reverse technology spillover and enterprises' innovation performance, using the data of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies over the period of 2008–17. The results show that OFDI reverse technology spillover has a significantly positive effect on innovation performance and that the effect of coastal regions in China is stronger than that of inland regions; formal institutional distance (FID) and informal institutional distance negatively moderate the impact of reverse technology spillover on innovation performance of OFDI enterprises in inland regions, whereas the FID positively moderates the relationship between reverse technology spillover on innovation performance of OFDI enterprises in coastal regions.

PurposeThe study aimed to analyze the influence of network embeddedness on the innovation performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong Province.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual model of the influence of network embeddedness on the innovation performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong province is established, which takes the business model as the mediating variable and political association as the moderating variable. Multivariate statistical analysis and the MacKinnon confidence interval method were used to analyze 418 questionnaires.FindingsThe results show that both relational embeddedness and structural embeddedness have significant positive effects on the innovation performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong Province. The business model has a partial mediating effect between relationship embeddedness, structure embeddedness, and innovation performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong Province, respectively. Political relevance has a significant negative moderating effect on the relationship between the relationship embeddedness and innovation performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong Province, but the moderating effect on structural embeddedness and innovation performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong province has not been verified.Research limitations/implicationsThe study of this paper also has some shortcomings: very few data research samples exist; the external factors affecting the performance of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong Province need to be further refined. The research scale needs further improvement.Practical implicationsIn this paper, embedding theory, transaction cost theory, resource dependence theory, rent-seeking theory, new institution theory and uncertainty management theory were integrated by system attempt to reveal the mediating and moderating roles of business model and political relevance, respectively, between network embeddedness behavior and entrepreneurial innovation performance of high-tech enterprises. The research conclusions expand the relevant research in the field of entrepreneurial innovation. At the same time, the research results provide theoretical support and reference for the innovative growth of high-tech enterprises and government behavior decision-making in Guangdong province.Originality/valueNetwork embeddedness will have a profound impact on the entrepreneurial innovation performance of high-tech enterprises. Existing research has overlooked discussing this issue from the perspective of internal and external influencing factors within the enterprise. Therefore, this study addresses this issue by (1) introducing the business model as the mediating variable from an internal perspective of the enterprise, (2) introducing political association as the moderating variable from an external perspective of the enterprise and (3) 418 original questionnaires of high-tech enterprises in Guangdong Province were used to test the effect of the study variables.

PurposeThis paper aims to identify the relationships of both organizational isomorphism and knowledge search with the innovation performance of cluster enterprises. It also specifies the mechanism by which organizational isomorphism affects innovation performance, through knowledge search.Design/methodology/approachFirm-level data were collected with questionnaires distributed to cluster enterprises in Zhejiang Province, China, which produced 165 usable responses for the analysis. Both multiple regression analyses and structural equation modelling were used to test the hypotheses.FindingsNormative isomorphism and mimetic isomorphism have inverse U-shaped effects on the innovation performance of cluster enterprises, as does exploratory knowledge search. Exploitative knowledge search and the balance between two types of knowledge search have positive effects on the innovation performance of cluster enterprises; exploratory and exploitative knowledge searches exert partial mediation effects between the organizational isomorphism and innovation performance of cluster enterprises. The mediating effect of knowledge search transforms the inverse U-shaped effect of normative isomorphism and mimetic isomorphism on innovation performance into a positive effect.Originality/valueThis study provides new insights into the effects of organizational isomorphism on innovation performance by showing the indirect influence of organizational isomorphism in clusters. The study proposes a strategic logic of moderate isomorphism, clarifies the innovative effect of different knowledge search modes and reveals the construction and management mechanisms of organizational isomorphism and knowledge search strategy of firms in clusters.

This study aims to explore the correlation between ESG ratings and returns in the electronic communication industry, and analyze the factors that affect this relationship. Firstly, there is a significant positive correlation between ESG ratings and returns, indicating the correlation between environmental, social, and governance factors and the profitability of enterprises in the electronic communication industry. Secondly, the study identified institutional investors as intermediaries who can actively adjust the relationship between ESG ratings and returns, thereby strengthening this correlation. However, there is a significant difference between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private enterprises, and ESG ratings are significantly correlated with the returns of state-owned enterprises, while they are not significant in private enterprises. In addition, the study also showed a negative moderating effect of company size on the relationship between ESG ratings and returns, indicating that company size may affect the impact of ESG factors on profitability, especially within larger companies.

In knowledge economy era, enterprise needs to innovate to maintain its advantages and competitiveness. Construction enterprises, being pillars of China’s economy and confronting the challenge brought by the strategy of “going out”, the call for their technology or management innovation was broadly pronounced across practical and academic fields. Social capital (SC), as a resource in a social network, is the basis for creating sustainable competitiveness and advantage for enterprises. The innovative achievements and innovation performance (IP) of enterprises are largely determined by their SC. To achieve competitiveness in the market, enterprises must carry out knowledge transfer (KT) with the other members of their networks. However, few scholars have examined weather SC has any effect on IP in construction enterprises. Using a KT perspective, this paper explored how SC affects the IP of construction enterprises. Based on the literature review and analysis, a conceptual model was constructed and validated using structural equation modeling (SEM). Through empirical analysis, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) SC has a positive impact on the IP of construction enterprises. Among them, the structural dimension (SD) and cognitive dimension (CD) have a significant positive impact on the IP of construction enterprises, while the relational dimension (RD) does not. (2) The SD, CD, and RD of construction enterprises’ SC have a positive influence on KT. (3) There are mediating effects of KT between SC and IP of construction firms, and they are partial. KT plays a partial mediating effect between SD, CD, and IP of construction firms. The research results can not only improve an understanding of effects of SC on IP of construction enterprises, but also validate the importance of KT in stimulating IP.

To survive in the fierce competition and its own limitations, private enterprises in China must innovate. Since most private enterprises lack material resources, it is realistic to rely on organizational memory to innovate. Based on the perspective of organizational memory, this paper explores the relationship between organizational memory, absorptive capacity and innovation performance. This paper collects data through questionnaire, and verifies the relationship between organizational memory and innovation performance by correlation analysis and regression analysis. It is found that organizational memory and innovation performance have a significant positive correlation at the level of 0.01, the correlation coefficient between organizational memory and innovation performance is 0.538 (P < 0.01), the correlation coefficient between declarative organizational memory and innovation performance is 0.468 (P < 0.01). The correlation coefficient between process organizational memory and innovation performance is 0.308 (P < 0.01). The results show that there is a significant positive correlation between organizational memory and innovation performance of private enterprises. Potential absorptive capacity has a significant moderating effect between organizational memory dimensions and innovation performance, while real absorptive capacity has a significant moderating effect between organizational memory dimensions and innovation performance. Thus, improving the organizational memory level and absorptive capacity of private enterprises has a positive role in promoting their innovation performance. This study examines the relationship between organizational memory, absorptive capacity and innovation performance, which expands the scope of organizational memory research, and provides a reference for private enterprise innovation from the perspective of organizational memory and absorptive capacity.
