Abstract

We present and illustrate a five-stage model of hypnotherapy for use with depressed, traumatized patients who express strong self-blame. The model is influenced by M. H. Erickson's conception of therapy as a reassociational endeavor and by his concept of utilizing the “observer modality” to moderate intense affect with trauma victims. In addition we show the importance of working at the “affective edge” where cognitive awareness and emotional responsiveness are present. Also, we demonstrate a form of ego-state work that extends the therapeutic relationships to the patient's own relationship with self.
