Abstract

The canto XXXVII of the third part of La Araucana begins with an excursus on Just War and duel that Ercilla used as a preface to commment on the annexation of Portugal by Philip II. The passage has been studied from different points of view, but without ever considering that his direct source is the Tratado de la guerra y el duelo by the poet’s father Fortun Garcia de Ercilla (1528). Besides being a late homage to the paternal memory, this fact conditions the political reading of the text.
